Hello and welcome! This is the introduction thread for The Age of Storm, a story set in Westeros 680 years before Aegon's Conquest. Unlike my other fanfiction here, this one is completely non-interactive and linear. That said, discussion, feedback, suggestions, etc. are more than welcome. I have so far been publishing the story on fanfiction.net, but in the future I will cross post new parts here (might also do a thread for already published parts as well). So, to start reading the story, follow this link: www.fanfiction.net/s/13034116/1/The-Age-of-Storm-Steel-Rain
The Seven Kingdoms
Kingdom of the Storm, ruled by the Storm Kings of House Durrandon from their seat at Storm's End. Sixteen years ago the current Storm King Arlan III Durrandon aided his friend and father-in-law Roderick Blackwood in ending the tyrannical rule of House Teague over the Riverlands. However, as Roderick died in the fighting and his only son was too young to rule, Arlan annexed Riverlands under the rule of House Durrandon. This has made the Kingdom of Storm larger and stronger than ever before in its history, the Storm King's rule reaching from the Dornish Marches all the way to the Neck, sharing borders with every other kingdom in the continent, safe for the Iron Islands. However, a large kingdom is hard to control, and many in the Riverlands still hold a grudge for the Storm King.
Kingdom of the Reach, ruled by the Gardener Kings from their seat at Highgarden. Reach is an old and large kingdom with fertile and populous lands, prominent chivalric traditions and considerable military strength both on sea and land. The current ruler is King Greydon I, the fifth king in the Gardener line after Mern VI who restored the power and stability of the Reach after a destructive civil war between House Peake and House Manderly. Greydon is seen as a strong and competent king, but the feuds of old still run deep in the noble families of the Reach.
Kingdom of the Rock, ruled by the Lannister Kings from their seat at Casterly Rock. The lords of these rugged lands have throughout history thrived by the wealth found in their vast gold and silver mines, which have brought them prosperous trade. Many kind of kings have ruled the Rock, from fierce warriors to feeble cowards, but two rivalries have persisted through them all. One against the Reachmen to the south that the Kings of the Rock have fought many fruitless wars against, and another against the Ironborn of the sea, who have raided the coasts of Westerlands for thousands of years. However, the current ruler King Lancel V has done something no Lannister has before and united in an alliance with the Ironborn. Ambitious and hungry for glory, he is determined to leave his mark in history.
Kingdom of the Iron Islands, ruled by the Iron Kings of House Hoare from their seat at Hoare Castle. The Iron Isles being harsh and barely fertile lands, the Ironborn have a long tradition of raiding the more fertile kingdoms of Westeros. At the height of their power they held lands all over the western coast from Arbor to Bear Island, but their power has dwindled over the centuries and now the only piece of land they hold outside of their isles is at Cape Kraken. The current ruler King Harmund II has continued in the footsteps of his father Harmund I, steering the kingdom to a new direction with favoring trading over raiding, as well as solidifying the alliance with Lannisters by marrying the daughter of King Lancel V.
Principality of Dorne, ruled by House Nymeros Martell from their seat at Sunspear. Princess Nymeria and the migrating Rhoynar arrived to Dorne twenty-four years ago, and won her war of unification twelve years ago. After this she has squashed an Yronwood rebellion and turned back an invasion led by the Storm King. The Principality is still young and finding its identity, but Nymeria is a respected and beloved leader dedicated to protecting her subjects.
Kingdom of Mountain and Vale, ruled by the Arryn Kings from their seat at Eyrie. The War Across the Water, a thousand year long conflict between the Vale and the North came to its end twenty-five years ago as King Hubert III Arryn settled a peace with King Eyron Stark, who gave up his ancestors' claims to the Three Sisters. Now the Vale is in peace and ruled by the young King Oswell II, the only son of the late King Hubert. During his peaceful reign of four years he has focused his efforts on pushing the mountain clans higher to the Moutains of the Moon to make the roads safer to travel, as well as expanding the Vale's trade across the Narrow Sea.
Kingdom of the North, ruled by the Stark Kings from their seat at Winterfell. Mostly isolated from the rest of Westeros, the North unlike the southern kingdoms is still dominated by First Men culture and traditions, including the worship of the Old Gods. Their wars with the Vale ended during the reign of King Eyron, and twenty years after that his sons King Harlon and Prince Karlon defeated a Bolton rebellion, uniting the North firmly under Stark rule. The current Lord Commander of the Night's Watch is Vorian Dayne, one of the Dornish kings sent to the Wall by Princess Nymeria.
