Masakazu opened the door to the cafe, feeling significantly more drained and exhausted than he had ever felt since his imprisonment in this hotel. Sleeping proved to be a very difficult task, especially since the chess player’s thoughts were plagued by thoughts of Ryoma and Jirou. The two ultimates were dead, unfortunate casualties of this cruel killing game. Masakazu had even watched Jirou die before his eyes, struggling for his life after being discovered as the culprit. The chess player shivered.
I can’t afford to think about that right now, especially not when there are others who are suffering more.
He took a look around the cafe. Sure enough, a few people were noticeably absent from the usual morning meeting place. Masakazu rubbed his eyes as he approached the occupied table.
“Good morning, everyone...does anyone know where Risa and Kasumi are?”
Konomi fiddled with her headphones, her hands shaking ever so slightly. “Risa wouldn’t answer when I came to check up on her earlier...I don’t think she’ll be joining us for awhile.” The audio technician’s expression turned somber as her eyes drifted towards the ground.
“...And Kasumi basically told me to buzz off when I asked her about meeting up today.” Kai revealed, brushing the back of his head with a nervous expression. “Not that I blame her, with everything that happened yesterday.”
Masakazu gave a heavy sigh as he took a seat. “Can’t say I’m surprised at either of their actions. They both lost someone important to them. Besides, having these morning meetings was Ryoma’s idea. It can’t be easy for either of them to come here knowing that…What about the other two?”
“Yubiseiharukana thought this was a waste of time, so she opted to investigate the first and second floors once more to try and discover something new. And Yuuki will arrive shortly, he claimed he wanted to grab some reading material from one of the commons areas.” Kenji said with crossed arms.
“You’ve gotta admire her dedication, but the way she treats others is irresponsible sometimes.” Kimiko remarked with a frown. “I offered to help her out and satisfy my craving for information at the same time, but she said I would’ve been an obstacle on her precious road towards answers! The nerve…”
Sumire shrugged. “At least she’s tryin to put energy into being productive and helpful in the face of yesterday’s events. Honestly, even I'm findin it hard to keep my spirits high today…” The tattoo artist rubbed her arm with a pained expression.
“Different people respond to different situations in their own ways, nya. Purr-haps Yubiseiharuka-nya has merely adapted to this killing game due to her talent as a detective, nya?” Hana put a hand to her chin in thought. “If that is the case, I’m curious to see how the rest of you will react, nya.”
“This isn’t a damn sideshow, you pint-sized philosopher. Everyone here is at risk of snapping, no matter how they present themselves. We’re all in the same boat here, and that includes you.” Jack spat as he pushed his sunglasses further towards his face.
“How could you say that, dude? Don’t you have faith in me or everyone else?” Kai asked with a frown on his face.
Jack scoffed. “Didn’t the rest of you have faith in Jirou? And how well did that end up, huh? Having blind trust in anyone here is a mistake.”
“Jirou’s personality was not provoked by the killing game initially, but instead by the motives presented, nya. Had the circumstances differed, there is a paw-sibility he would have chosen his actions differently, nya.” The philosopher tilted her head. “I merely want to see how this game plays out, as well as how the rest of you adapt, nya. Or is being paranoid and afraid of everyone around you your way of adapting to this situation, nya?”
“You little...how dare you!” Jack clenched his fists and stood up, only to be met with a few disdainful stares from Tetsuya, Takako, and Sumire. He straightened his blazer and walked away from the table, heading towards the cafe’s entrance. “I don’t have to take this. I’ll be around the dorms if anyone feels like trying to stab me next later.”
Tetsuya ran a hand through his hair with an annoyed expression. “What a handful that one is. Not even a whole day goes by before he starts talking bad about the dead and returns to his previous behavior. How are we supposed to move on and learn from our mistakes if we can’t even keep together as a group?”
Takako sighed. “I understand where he’s coming from, but he’s doing more harm than good. Best to just leave him be for now. More importantly, what should we do from here on out? We need some kind of plan going forward.”
“I agree with that notion, but there is little to go off of.” Kenji explained with a frown. “The motive box has disappeared and the Plus One clause is no longer in effect. This place is effectively the same as it was when we arrived, and we didn’t know anything back then either.”
“But we can’t just-”
Kai was interrupted by the sound of the cafe’s doors opening and the sound of footsteps as Yuuki quickly made his way over to the group. The puzzle solver seemed distressed as he caught his breath.
“What’s the matter?! Don’t tell me that-” Konomi’s concerns were answered with a shake of Yuuki’s head.
“Everyone is alright...I just had to get here before Monokuma did.” The puzzle solver reached into his pocket and took out his Electro-ID. “I ran into him and he told me to gather you for something special. He wouldn’t tell me what, exactly.”
Sumire rolled her eyes. “And what exactly does that bear want with us now, huh? I might not be able to knock some sense into em, but that doesn’t mean I’ll listen to whatever he has to say.”
“Wow. First of all, extremely rude.” A voice came from behind the group, and everyone turned around to discover Monokuma standing on top of the table behind them. “I mean, that behavior is totally unacceptable. I’m your headmaster and all, right? You should treat me with the respect and admiration I deserve!”
“You don’t ‘deserve’ anything except hate for what you pulled yesterday.” Kimiko responded with an aggressive stare. “Why should we listen to an executioner?”
The ursine sighed and placed a paw over his forehead. “Time and time again I gotta explain this...I didn’t do anything! I just followed the rules of this hotel, plain and simple. Blame yourselves for not being able to stop that comic book enthusiast before he got his hands dirty.”
Kenji stood up, crossing his arms at the bear. “Just tell us whatever you came to say and cut the bullshit.”
“Oh? Ever the one to take charge, eh Mr Ishikawa? Very well then…” Monokuma cleared his throat before striking an extravagant pose. “I’m here to announce a brand new rule to the killing game, as well as more additions to this hotel for you to all enjoy!”
With that declaration, the student’s Electro-IDs began to buzz. Masakazu reluctantly opened his and turned to the rules section. Rule #12: Additional hotel facilities will unlock themselves after every trial, as will Ultimate Labs. “New Ultimate Labs and hotel facilities?” Masakazu asked aloud, giving his Electro-ID a puzzled stare.
“I’m glad you asked, my dear Masakazu! If the lot of you would meet me up by the grand hall, then I would be more than willing to show you just what that rule means. And don’t worry about any other slackers or tardy participants, they’ll still get to enjoy the festivities eventually as well.” With that, Monokuma hopped off the table and waddled away out of eyesight.
Konomi rubbed her arm before turning to the rest of the group. “Well...what should we do?”
Yuuki bit his thumb. “Not like we have anything to lose by following his directions. Perhaps we’ll get more information about this hotel by exploring these new areas?”
The rest of the group hesitantly agreed with the puzzle solver, eventually making their way to the grand hall. Once they entered, their ursine captor beckoned them from the balcony’s railing.
“Not down there, you lemmings! Up here, past the hidden elevator.”
The group climbed the stairs, stopping next to the wall to the right of the hidden elevator they used the day before. Tetsuya impatiently tapped his foot.
“Well? What exactly are we waiting for here, exactly?”
“You can’t rush these types of things, Mr Obara. Our machinery is very delicate and works in a special way.” Monokuma giggled to himself and walked up to the wall. “First, you have to knock on the wall 53 times…”
“I’m not waiting that long. Just hurry it up.” Takako said with a neutral expression, causing the bear to shrug.
“Just wait a few more seconds, you ungrateful brats…”
The ultimates stood there for a few more short seconds, each of them wondering just what was supposed to happen. Suddenly, the loud sound of machinery humming echoed throughout the grand hall. The wall slid to the side and retracted behind the other walls, revealing a large staircase that wrapped around to another floor. As the group stood there shocked, a certain bear chuckled to himself.
“Consider this your welcome to the third floor, bastards. Explore to your heart’s content, just know that the Ultimate Labs won’t be available until tomorrow.” The monochromatic ursine began to walk away before suddenly stopping to turn towards the group with its red eye glowing. “Oh, and one other thing. We’ll be using the grand hall from now on to discuss motives and other developments in this killing game, so keep that in mind. Until next time...upupupupu!”
After Monokuma made his exit, the students took turns looking at one another, waiting to see who would take the first step into the unknown. Kenji began climbing the stairs without a second thought, followed soon by Takako and a nervous Tetsuya. One by one, the ultimates began ascending the staircase towards the third floor. Masakazu followed behind, trying his best to push his concerns for the situation in the back of his mind. And there you have it, the beginning of chapter 2 of this wonderful story! Sorry it took so long to release, this summer has been a lot busier than I expected it to be. I'm just glad to have the first part finally released.
I don't anticipate being able to write the next part in these next few days, but I can guarantee it won't take nearly as long as the wait for this one.
QOTD: What do you think the third floor has in store for our participants? What Ultimate Labs could be unveiled in the future?
That's all I have to say for now, see you in the next update~

QOTD: I... have no earthly clue!
On a more serious note, I loved Hana in this part. And more generally, I love the dynamic the cast has, everyone feels distinct!

QOTD: Yeah I dunno. XD I'm not sure what to expect. Upgrades of their current labs possibly? I don't know! But I'm excited to see the story back, I've missed it! This part was quite appropriately depressing. So worried for Risa, hoping to see her soon.

Sorry for the late comment, exams kept me busy until this week. I am glad that I have not missed a part though ^^ And man, that was a great start for the new chapter! As expected, Kasumi and Risa are taking this really bad (though I should say, still, I don't feel an ounce of sympathy or pity or anything good for Jirou. All of that goes to Risa, who deserves better). Gotta say, due to my everlasting hatred towards Jirou, I took a bit of a liking towards Jack in this part. No, I do not trust him, he's shady as hell, but someone's gotta speak ill of Jirou. I'm surprised out of all these great characters, Jack is the one decent enough to do it. He keeps that up, he might become one of my favourite characters. Plus, as much as Hana is already one of my favourite characters, Jack telling her off and Hana really getting beneath his skin got a smirk out of me. More interaction between these two, please, they had the best dynamic in this part! Also... man, I am really stressed out over who is going to be killed next and who the killer might be. Who knows, maybe this time I can even feel a tiny shred of compassion for the killer. Part of me thinks that all those not at the meeting right now are in grave danger, but then again, I kinda feel like that is a red herring. We'll see, but I presume the next victim will be revealed in the next part or the part after that and right now, it could honestly be anyone As for the question... is it okay if I ask a small question myself? So, I am completely new to Danganronpa, but when it comes to the Ultimate Labs, does every character have one and are they unlocked from the very beginning, or are they just gradually discovered by the cast over time? And the third floor... yeah, danger. I bet the next character will die on the third floor. That is my prediction for the day.

As for the question... is it okay if I ask a small question myself? So, I am completely new to Danganronpa, but when it comes to the Ultimate Labs, does every character have one and are they unlocked from the very beginning, or are they just gradually discovered by the cast over time? And the third floor... yeah, danger. I bet the next character will die on the third floor. That is my prediction for the day. Ultimate Talent Labs are actually a new addition to Danganronpa V3, the... 4th game, and 5th story in the series (Ultra Despair Girls is a non-numbered spin-off, and the Anime was titled Danganronpa 3 to make it clear it was a sequel to DR2... with V3 being to make it easy to tell apart from the DR3 anime). Anyway, that means that we only have one game to go off, fun fact! But yes, they're generally discovered as the game progresses, as an evolution of the normal DR formula of adding new rooms/floors/areas at the start of each new chapter.

A large set of double doors waited for Masakazu at the top of the staircase. He moved to open them, revealing a room he had not expected in the slightest. It was about twice as large as the grand hall was, and was filled with several rows of slot machines and other similar activities. The furnishings inside were very lavish and decorative, adding to the casino theme Monokuma was most likely trying to develop.
The others have probably already left to explore...I should try to find them.
Masakazu decided to start exploring by walking to a location that lacked the decorative vibe of the rest of the room. Around the middle of the casino was what looked to be some kind of bar, complete with a case of various types of alcohol. Tetsuya was standing behind the counter, looking a bit annoyed as he tried to find a way to open the case. Kai was sitting on a nearby stool as he continued looking around the enormous casino.
“Wow...I still can’t believe they’ve got something like this here, dude! Isn’t this place just incredible?”
“It isn’t uncommon for hotels to have casinos, but I see your point. Now be quiet for a second while I figure out how this damn thing opens…”
As Masakazu got closer, Kai eventually took notice of him. The surfer gave an excited wave as he smiled at the chess player. “Hey Masa, come over here dude! Isn’t this place great?”
“It’s quite large, that’s for certain. What have you two found so far?”
“Tetsuya wanted to check out this bar a bit, and I wanted to take in the sights of this new room some more, so here we are!” He explained with another grin.
Tetsuya rolled his eyes as he knelt down to look at the display case’s lock. “And I was also hoping for some peace and quiet while I found a way to unlock this, but I guess we can’t always get what we want.”
Masakazu tilted his head as he examined the contents inside the case with more detail. “Why are you so intent on getting inside that case anyway?”
Tetsuya tried to pull on the lock with no success. With a groan, he stood back up. “Because there’s alcohol in there that we could be putting to better use, that’s why.”
“Better use? Like what, dude? I thought that drinking any kind of alcohol was like, a bad idea or something.” Kai said with a confused expression.
“Only in excess. Some dishes even taste better when paired with a specific type of wine. I just wanted to experiment with what we had here, but I just can’t get the damn thing open...maybe I could just break the glass and move the bottles to the kitchen downstairs?”
As soon as Tetsuya suggested it, Monokuma suddenly appeared from under the bar’s counter with a horrified expression. “Not only underage drinking, but vandalism too?! Jeez, how troubled are youths nowadays?”
Masakazu stared at the bear with an annoyed look, ignoring his comment. “What do you want now?”
The monochromatic bear put a paw to his chin as he tilted his head. “Huh? Whacha mean? Can I not even show up to care for my precious students without an ulterior motive anymore?”
“Gonna be honest, not really dude.” Kai replied with a shrug. “You’re not exactly the trustworthy type, you know?”
Monokuma looked at the ground with a disappointed look. “Ah, hell...you’ve got me figured out in only a few short days. Oh well.” His expression quickly changed as he took on a more upbeat tone. “I wasn’t lying about the ‘checking up on you’ part, but I do have something important to inform you of.”
Tetsuya glared at him. “And what would that be?”
“Well, first off, you can’t drink any alcohol. You’re still students and I’m the headmaster, after all. I don’t wanna be out of a job! And secondly, no breaking of any glass around here if you want to keep on breathing. Don’t tell me everyone’s already forgotten about our sacred killing game rules...”
“You’re talking about the rule that forbids destruction of hotel property, aren’t you?” Masakazu asked.
“Yep yep, that’s exactly right! I can always count on good old Masakazu to help reinforce the order around here! What a star pupil, the epitome of righteousness!” Monokuma said in an even more excited tone.
Normally comments like that would be appreciated by Masakazu, but hearing it from Monokuma just felt wrong. The chess player crossed his arms. “Fine, you’ve delivered your message. You can leave now.”
“Right you are! Well now that I’ve cleared that up, any further attempts to vandalize the hotel will result in immediate punishment. So make sure to remain on your best behavior, you three!” And with that, Monokuma waddled away.
Tetsuya ran a hand through his hair with an annoyed look. “Well, that’s just great. Tempt us with something good and turn right back around to ruin it for everyone. What a horrible bear that Monokuma is.”
“He seems like he’s enjoying this situation a bit too much as well. It creeps me out…” Kai said with a frown.
“He’s just trying to psyche us out after what happened yesterday. It’s best to pay him no mind.” Masakazu turned around to glance at the casino’s scenery once more. “Well, I should get going if I want to explore the rest of this place. I’ll see you two later.”
“See you later, Masa!” Kai responded with a friendly wave.
“Later.” Tetsuya replied in turn.
Masakazu gave them both a wave of his own before walking to the other side of the casino. Another set of double doors awaited him on the other side, and after opening them the chess player found himself in a hallway. He decided to use the map function on his Electro-ID to navigate this new floor, and was quite surprised at the rooms he saw listed. After some deliberation, he decided to head for the library they apparently had now.
The library was very impressive looking, with one side of the room being entirely covered by bookcases. There were smaller bookcases scattered about in the room as well, along with some comfy looking armchairs and benches for reading. Several wooden carts were also placed inside the room, carrying various stacks of books upon them. Upon entering, Masakazu encountered both Yuuki and Kenji inside. Yuuki was sitting in a chair off to the side, already taking advantage of the new room by reading a book. Kenji was busy looking at several books on the shelves, seemingly not interested in any of them due to the fact that he kept putting them away. Neither of them seemed to acknowledge Masakazu’s entrance.
“So...a library, huh?”
“...Yep.” Was all Yuuki replied with as he flipped to the next page in his book.
“Find anything interesting to read since you found this room?” Masakazu asked, trying to spark some kind of conversation.
“Maybe. I haven’t read much of this book, so I can’t say whether or not it’s interesting.”
“Ah...well, I hope you enjoy it?”
“So do I. Good luck with your exploration.” Yuuki replied as he pulled the book closer to his face, most likely as a way to end the discussion.
Deciding that he might have more luck with Kenji, Masakazu approached the kendo fighter next. “What about you, Kenji? You don’t seem to have an interest in these books over here.”
“That’s because I don’t have an interest in books to begin with.” He revealed, putting another book away as he glanced to the cover.
Masakazu raised an eyebrow. “If you don’t enjoy reading, why do you keep looking for a book?”
“Force of habit, I suppose. I try to read at least one book a day though.”
“Really? Why’s that?”
The kendo fighter sighed as he put the next book up. “Look, if I tell you it’s because of a friend will you leave me alone so I can find something to read?”
“Ah...sorry for intruding in that case, I meant no disrespect.” Masakazu replied as he gave Kenji an apologetic look. “If it’s any consolation, I think it’s very admirable that you’re doing something you dislike for a friend of yours.”
Kenji scratched the back of his head with another sigh. “Jeez...alright, don’t take it so personally. Let’s just bury the hatchet and forget this conversation happened. You’re one of the least bothersome people here, so don’t worry about it.”
“Alright then, if you insist. I guess I’ll leave you to it, then. Good luck finding a book to read, Kenji.” Masakazu said as he made his way to the library’s exit. Kenji gave a slight wave from behind his back as he continued looking through the shelves of books.
Masakazu opened his Electro-ID again to determine where he’d go next. Out of the two remaining options, he chose the one that sounded the most exciting. And with that we're officially back! For good this time, I swear.
As I stated in the last post, summer was unexpectedly busy for me. School started back up last month too, and I even lost my notes for this next post so I had to remake it from scratch. It seems that everything was just working against me just to make sure I couldn't have time to work on this. Sorry for the unexpected break!
I refuse to let this series have yet another hiatus, so I'm going to attempt to make weekly updates from now on since I have more free time now. Fridays are usually my best days, so expect a new post every Friday!
QOTD: It seems we've got a casino, bar, and even a library added to our hotel's list of rooms now. What other rooms do you think are possibly waiting just around the corner?
That's all I've got to say for now, so I'll see you in the next update~

Hmm, interesting question. I think, judging by previous Danganronpa, that I have no earthly way to tell! Rooms don't always follow a theme, especially in the newer games. But for some reason I'm expecting a gym?
Anyway, while reading the entire update I kept imagining Yubi finally catching up to the group in the new area, and cursing the fact they have a casino. Gambling's illegal in Japan you know! (The closest thing, Pachinko, relies on the same loopholes that let kids play at arcades. Trading money for tickets, and tickets for prizes.)
Anyway, it's good to finally be back, I've honestly missed our lovable group of misfits!

Yay, it's back! I really missed these characters. Still selfishly wanting to see Risa btw! QOTD: I'm thinking maybe a theater? That'd be cool.

The next room’s door was extremely vibrant, being stylized with a pixelated design with multiple colors. There was a window next to it as well, which Masakazu could see through. He spotted two other people inside, so he decided to investigate by simply entering the room. The room was just about as colorful as its door was, with the carpet and walls sporting a multitude of colors. Various arcade machines lined the walls, and there were even some other objects like a pool table and dart board inside. This was definitely the type of arcade Masakazu envisioned when he saw it on the map. Takako and Konomi were both looking around at the arcade machines, although the livestreamer looked a bit more curious than the audio technician. They turned to face Masakazu as he entered. “Hey there, Masa! How’s it going?” Konomi greeted the chess player with more enthusiasm than he expected. “I’m pretty good, I suppose. You two find anything interesting around here?” Takako slowly shook her head as he continued inspecting a specific arcade machine. “Not really. Everything around here seems like typical arcade stuff, minus the games on the machines themselves.” She gestured to the arcade machines lined up in front of them, each bearing a monochromatic pattern similar to Monokuma. The names of the games were labeled on the side as well. The chess player leaned over to list off the names of the various games. “Mono-Man, Despair Invaders...Super Kuma Bros…?” Masakazu had almost no knowledge of old video games, but still found these arcade machines to be quite dubious. Takako rolled her eyes. “Poor imitations of famous arcade games. Couldn’t even be bothered to get the real deal here, huh?” “They’re probably here because they’re imitations. Most likely to annoy us in that regard.” Masakazu pointed out. Konomi crossed her arms and sighed. “Monokuma’s that spiteful, huh? Why even go through all this effort for us? What did we ever do to deserve getting tossed in here in the first place?” “That bear has mentioned several times that this hotel apparently belongs to Hope’s Peak. The letters in our rooms also mentioned that we’re here to celebrate the fact that we’ve been chosen to attend such a prestigious school.” “...Then why are we in a killing game and not enjoying our peaceful lives…?” Takako asked after a moment of hesitation. “I...don’t think any of us could possibly answer that question.” Masakazu replied as he rubbed his arm. “At least we’re survived a few days so far…” “...Not all of us though.” Takako remarked before she continued investigating around the arcade machines. Konomi suddenly cleared her throat and tried speaking in her usual upbeat tone again. “W-We can worry about all that stuff later! For now, let’s focus on the task at hand. We’ve got this room covered Masa, so you can go on ahead!” Masakazu brushed the back of his head, relieved a bit from the change of topic. “Very well then. I’ll see you two later.” Konomi gave the chess player a thumbs up as he exited the room. He took a look at his Electro-ID to see where to head next. Just like the first floor, there were several rooms of similar structure and design on the third floor. These rooms were not referred to as ‘common areas’, but instead ‘recreational areas’. They lacked the spacious interior that the common areas had, but made up for it by having more decorative and comfortable seating and a relaxing atmosphere. These rooms were most likely intended to provide guests with yet another place to socialize and enjoy themselves. There were two recreational areas, one on each side of the floor. After checking his Electro-ID once more, Masakazu discovered that there was only one last room left unexplored. He walked to the room’s location on the map and opened the two burgundy colored doors as he entered the room. There were several blue colored sofas strewn about the room, all of which faced the giant monitor with huge speakers affixed to the far wall. The left and right walls themselves were completely covered by decorative glass shelves and filled to the brim with various CDs and DVDs. There was a comically small end table placed directly under the tv, as if meant to bring attention to their differing sizes. On top of the end table was a Monokuma styled video player. The three other people investigating the room turned around once they heard Masakazu enter. “What a coincidence meeting you here Nya-sakazu, nya. Were you perhaps interested in this strange room as well?” Hana asked with a tilt of her head. Kimiko raised her pen to her chin in thought. “It’s not really that strange, though. It’s just a normal AV room, see? Everything in here suggests it.” “But it’s a pretty fuckin’ impressive AV room to begin with, yeah? I wonder if there’s any DVDs on tattoos or drawin’ lyin’ around here somewhere...?” Sumire asked aloud as she opened the door to one of the shelves and began rummaging around. “It is pretty impressive, I’ll give it that.” Masakazu admitted as he gave the room a second look. “But that’s it though? Just a normal AV room with normal AV room stuff inside it?” “...It seems that way so far, nya. Are you purr-haps disappointed in the lack of suspicious material inside, nya?” Hana asked as she reached for her notepad. “Have you maybe changed your stance on this killing game and have become more paranoid and suspicious as a result, nya? Purr-haps you could tell me more about it over a short inter-mew, nya?” Kimiko snapped out of her daze and quickly flipped to a new page in her own notepad, a flash of light in her eyes as she gripped her pen. “Did someone say ‘interview’?! Do I smell some kind of new scoop here, after waiting so long for something juicy?” Masakazu immediately regretted saying anything. Knowing that being in the same room as these two was a bad idea, he quickly excused himself. “Erm...maybe later? I still have a few other places to investigate before the day ends. I really must be going…” While Kimiko seemed disappointed, Hana just nodded and returned to her own affairs. “I will inquire about that later on then, nya. There’s still plenty of time to see how this killing game has shaped you and the others, nya.” “Oh well...I guess I’ll just see you later then, Masa! See you!” Kimiko eventually said as she waved the chess player goodbye. “See ya later.” Sumire replied with a small wave over her shoulder, still immersed in the stack of DVDs in front of her. Masakazu left the room shortly afterwards and took a look at the time on his Electro-ID. It was currently 9:30 pm, just half an hour before curfew began. Masakazu quickly began making his way back to the first floor to make it to his room in time.
Has it really taken us all that time just to explore the new floor? I guess it had quite a lot of ground to cover, but still…Monokuma said we were supposed to get new Ultimate Labs tomorrow. I wonder if any of those will hold any new clues for us?The chess player’s thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a few books falling nearby. Since he was currently on the second floor, it could only have belonged to one room. He cautiously opened the door to Jirou’s Ultimate Lab and looked around. The lights were off, but Masakazu could see a glimmer of light coming from the other end of the room. Bracing himself, he turned on the lights. A sound of surprise came from further within, and Masakazu’s suspicion was replaced with concern when he recognized the voice. He entered the room and looked around. “...Risa? Is that you?” As he walked down an aisle of comic books and manga, he found the magician sitting down on the floor, surrounded by comics and a fallen display stand. Masakazu leaned over to offer her his hand without a second thought. After a second of hesitation, Risa scooped up her tophat off the ground before accepting his help getting back up. “Um...thanks, Masa…” “What are you doing here at this time of night, don’t you know that curfew’s about to start?” Masakazu asked with a raised eyebrow. Risa dusted herself off and looked to the side, avoiding his question at first. Eventually, she spoke. “...I just wanted to see if I was still able to enter and use Jirou’s Ultimate Lab, even if he’s gone...doesn’t look like Monokuma locked it or anything, so that’s a good sign...right?” He nodded. “It’s a good sign, that means that we could most likely still use Ryoma’s lab too. Is that...the only reason you came?” “Y-Yeah! Monokuma let me know earlier that there was a new floor, so I just wanted to check out the old labs just in case we missed anything. I wanted to help out...that’s it!” Risa replied with an obviously forced smile. Masakazu narrowed his eyes as he gave the magician another concerned glance. “...You know, you don’t have to lie to me about your intentions. I know this must be hard for you as well.”
Risa relaxed her shoulders, slouching forward ever so slightly as she gripped her cane. “...That obvious, huh? Can’t get anything past you I guess.” The chess player brushed the back of his head. “I guess not...if you want to talk about it, I’m always here for you. It’s probably best if you didn’t keep your emotions bottled up over this.” “I...maybe. We’ll see how I’m feeling later on. I don’t think I’m gonna feel alright over this for a good long while, Masa...” She readjusted her top hat and slowly made her way to the lab’s exit. “...Night.” “...Good night, Risa. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Masakazu told the magician before she left. Before leaving for his own room, Masakazu decided to clean up the mess on the floor by putting the comics back into place on their fallen display stand. However, one comic was left without a place to return it to. Initially confused, Masakazu decided to open it. There were only blank pages within the comic book, which didn’t really tell the chess player anything of import. He decided to leave it on the room’s countertop and left for his dorm. As he arrived at his dorm and entered, the nighttime announcement played. “Attention all students, it is now 10 pm. As such, it is officially nighttime, and some hotel facilities will be unavailable. Now then...sweet dreams everyone! Goodnight!” Masakazu didn’t pay the announcement much thought as he quickly drifted to sleep.
And with that, the third floor's rooms have finally been revealed! (Well, minus Ultimate Labs...but we'll save those for the next part!) Sorry for the delay, school's been immensely busy lately! Everything should calm down by the end of this week though. QOTD: What's your favorite room on the third floor?
I've already made the next strawpoll for this chapter's free time events on the discord server, but I'll put it here as well for those of you who haven't seen it yet. Don't forget to vote for five students in total! The five with the most votes will get first dibs on free time events for this chapter, so choose wisely. The poll will stay open until Friday, when I plan on releasing the next update. www.strawpoll.me/18680852Nothing much else to say, really. See you in the next update~ -♞ Chess Boi

I think I have to say the arcade! ...well, if only because of the enjoyable character interactions in its introductory scenes. I do wonder how playable those Monokuma themed games are, it wouldn't be too out of character if they were unenjoyable messes, just to twist the knife a little further.
Other than that, I don't have much to say this part, other than wondering what the hell Yubi was doing the whole time. I'm not complaining about screen time because it's good to see the other characters shine, but I find it amusing (and very on brand) that she's been off having her own adventure this whole time.
If this was Danganronpa 2, Yubi would simply defeat the Mono-beasts each chapter, I think.

I wonder what suspicious thing Risa was up too in Jirou's room. I believe she was looking for something. I wonder if it had to do with the comic with blank pages. I guess we will find out later. Also. I'm curious about the next ultimate labs!

Risa's finally here, yay! But it's sad Still so good to have her back, I was really missing her. I know people are probably assuming she was up to something suspicious. But I think it's a case of she's sadly looking at Jirou's comics but is hiding it considering that he murdered Ryoma. Some people are certain to not appreciate that. That's just my take though, I could be completely wrong. But just a quick and gentle reminder that Risa is Best Girl!

Argh, I missed the last vote. Sorry for that, but I made it this time So, this part made me think about Risa. It's clear she is super torn up about the situation and she's taking it at least as bad as Kasumi, perhaps even worse, given that Kasumi seemed almost stable after Ryoma's death. I mean, we haven't seen how Kasumi holding up now after the initial shock wore off, but I feel like Risa is as close to a breakdown as possible. Of course, this could just be her having a lot of empathy, which doesn't sound too unlikely, but I have to wonder just how close she grew to Jirou over such a short time. And that made me wonder... what if they knew each other before all this already? I have a pretty limited understanding of the Danganronpa games, but as far as I know, there's nothing speaking against any of the Ultimates knowing each other before. Then, for each other's safety, Risa and Jirou agreed to keep this a secret. And I don't mean to imply she is involved in anything sinister there, if that is true then there's no shame in hiding such a connection for safety reasons. But it would certainly explain why she is so genuinely devastated over Jirou's death. Also, man, I am anxious for the next part, because I feel like someone is going to be found dead anytime now and I honestly expected it with the last two parts already. That next killer is sure putting a lot of time into their plans, perhaps seeing how Jirou, despite putting a genuinely sickening amount of thought into his murder, was eventually found out with not too much of a problem. I bet the next killer is going to be a lot more difficult to deduce. As for the question, I also enjoyed the arcade scene. I know, I know, that bear bastard is terrible and I hate his stupid face, but even I have to admit, it is hilarious just how petty Monokuma is in absolutely everything he does. The level of spite involved in actually programming mock video games just to mess with the ultimates is just another reason why I wholeheartedly love to hate him.

The sight that awaited the chess player in the cafe was a drastic change from how it was the previous morning, and Masakazu immediately understood why. Besides Yubiseiharukana, there was one other person present that wasn’t there before. Risa was seated between a relieved Konomi and an excitable Kai, actually looking a little bit better than she was when Masakazu ran into her last night.
Masakazu couldn’t help but smile as he approached. “Well, you all seem relatively lively this morning.”
“Hey Masa! Yeah, and it’s all thanks to Risa here. Since she decided to come out, we’ve been trying to help improve her mood a bit.” Kai replied with a grin.
“And is it working?” Masakazu asked before sitting directly across from the group of three.
The magician twirled a lock of her hair with a finger as she looked away with a smile. “...Maybe a bit.”
“I’m glad to hear it. If there’s anything you need, just say the word. Now then…” Masakazu tilted his head to glance towards the other ultimates in the room. “Did anyone notice anything of importance during or after the investigation of the new floor?”
After a moment of silence, Hana spoke up. “Purr-haps a general overview of our findings would be more beneficial, nya. Especially for those of whom haven’t explored the third floor yet, nya.”
“Alright then, let’s talk about that huge casino first! Isn’t it amazing?!” Kai said, sparkles of amazement clearly visible in his eyes.
“Amazingly illegal, more like. Don’t any of you know that it’s against the fucking law to gamble in Japan? How the hell did that slip under the radar when this place was being built?” Yubiseiharukana replied with folded arms.
“...People have died and we’re trapped here, yet that’s your first priority right now?” Jack asked aloud, giving the detective an incredulous expression. Yubi merely rolled her eyes at him.
“Moving on...there’s also the manner of the bar inside the casino room. It doesn’t serve much of a purpose unfortunately, since all the alcohol is locked up.” Tetsuya remarked with a sigh.
Yubi squinted and prepared herself to say something in regards to Tetsuya’s apparent craving for alcohol, but thankfully Kenji caught on and spoke over her.
“The library is nothing out of the ordinary. It’s exactly as you’d expect a library to look, and has plenty of choices for anyone interested.”
“...It’ll probably be a good place to get your mind off of things and relax.” Yuuki added in a low voice.
“Oh yeah, the arcade’s kind of like that too!” Konomi spoke next, adjusting her headphones with her free hand. “The arcade machines themselves are a bit...peculiar, but there’s tons of other stuff we could use to have some fun around here!”
“And last but not least, there’s the recreational rooms and the AV room.” Jack said as he cupped a hand over his mouth to stifle a yawn. “The recreational rooms were pretty substandard, and were basically the same as the common areas on this floor.”
“And the AV room is the opposite of that! A very lavish room with an impressive amount of media to play and watch together.” Kimiko finished, reading from her notepad.
“That sounds like everything. So, I take it there’s nothing else to discuss with those rooms?” Masakazu asked after thinking over everyone’s findings.
“Nah, no chance of that. I inspected almost every inch of those rooms once everyone had fallen asleep. Not a single fucking clue or secret to be found.” Yubi replied as she scrolled through her Electro-ID.
“A bit disappointing, to be honest...but at least we don’t have to worry about anything else for now.” Takako said as she slouched forward in her seat. “We should focus on whatever we find today now that we’ve got that covered.”
“Huh? Whatcha mean?” Sumire asked, turning to the livestreamer.
“You don’t remember what Monokuma said when he opened the path to the third floor? He said that there were Ultimate Labs that weren’t available until today. They’ve probably been open since the morning announcements, if I were to hazard a guess.”
“...So, you think we ought to explore those next, yeah? What if they aren’t safe?” Jack asked, readjusting his sunglasses so that his eyes remained out of sight.
“That would defeat the purpose of having a killing game. Our safety is more or less that bear’s highest priority until he says otherwise.”
Masakazu and the others turned around towards the sound of the voice. Kasumi stood at the entrance to the cafe, eyeing the group’s reactions to her sudden appearance. Eventually, she approached the table that the group was seated at and took up a seat at the very end.
“...Sorry, just speaking my mind. Is something wrong with that?” She asked, glancing back and forth for anyone to speak up.
Kai brushed the back of his head with a nervous expression. “Not really, it’s just that none of us expected you to show up today. How are you-”
“I’m fine. Besides, you shouldn’t be shocked to see me here. All fourteen of us are in attendance this morning, after all.” The unknown ultimate cut Kai off before he could finish and then stared straight at Risa. “...And you?”
Risa, who had been relatively calm since Masakazu’s arrival, seemed to be a bit fidgety ever since Kasumi entered. “I, um…” She lowered her head for a moment before scooping up both her top hat and cane and standing up from her seat. “I’m gonna go take a walk. S-See you guys later.”
The magician swiftly took her leave, followed not long after by a concerned Konomi and Kai. “...Sorry, we’ll catch up with you guys later. Check out the new labs for us!” The audio technician called out before exiting.
The once jovial and relaxing mood that overtook the group was replaced with a thin veil of uncomfortable silence. No one said anything until Jack mumbled something aloud.
“...Awkward.”
Yubi elbowed him in the side before clearing her throat. “We should follow Konomi’s advice and see what those new labs have to offer. Well...get to searching, damnit!”
As everyone started clearing out, Masakazu decided to take one last passing glance towards Kasumi. She had muttered a few curses earlier under her breath just barely loud enough for the chess player to hear, and at the moment remained sitting with a regretful expression on her face.
Before he could do much of anything, Takako approached her. “I’ll tell you about the rooms you missed out on earlier, if that’s something you’re interested in.”
“...Yeah, sure. Go ahead.” Kasumi readjusted her posture as she began talking to the livestreamer.
Masakazu breathed a sigh of relief. Even if he wasn’t able to reassure and help some of them, he was glad to know that there were others who were more than capable of filling that role for him. The chess player made his leave shortly thereafter, heading for the grand hall and the third floor. Relatively small update before we start getting into the new Ultimate Labs. Speaking of which...
QOTD: Who do you think will be getting a lab this chapter? (There will be three new lab reveals in total)
That's all I've got for now, so I'll see you in the next update~

Yay! A new update!
As for the QOTD, since this floor seems to be entertainment focused, I'm guessing someone among the list of Masakazu, Konomi, Yuuki, or Takako would be likely to get their rooms opened.
As usual, I'm loving the character interactions, and I appreciate that there's some tension among the cast... that's not always easy to engineer when putting a cast of characters together, some part of you always wants them to be friends.

Small update but very happy about it! Awesome to read about these characters again. It was good to imagine Risa cheering up but then that awkward tension with her and Kaaumi. Oof. It'll be interesting to find out Kasumi's thoughts on Risa. At the moment I feel Risa either feels awkward or uncomfortable around her or that she might be scared of her. Couldn't blame her if she did, I'm a little scared of what she might do. QOTD: I'm thinking maybe Risa? As Madsin mentioned above it could be entertainment based and for me it might make sense for Risa. That's it, I'm not biased! ... Okay I'm a little biased but still.

As Masakazu was heading up the staircase in the grand hall, he noticed something rather peculiar. Not too far from where the laundry room was located was a strange symbol on one of the doors that no one could open before. It seemed to resemble some sort of pen, although the chess player doubted that its purpose was to write. Deciding to investigate further, he gripped the door knob and turned it. To his surprise, it opened.
Inside was a sight that Masakazu never expected he’d see in his life. The entire room was covered wall to wall with a myriad of shapes, patterns, and designs, accompanied by several workstations with their own provided tools and computers. Next to every workstation was a black chair that seemed to be *exceptionally* comfortable to sit in. Even though he had never visited one himself, Masakazu knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was standing in a tattoo parlor. Especially since Sumire was currently inspecting the place with an exceptionally wide grin on her face.
“So, I take it this place is your Ultimate Lab then?” He asks, taking a few more steps into the room to properly analyze it.
Sumire nods before she continues looking over the set of tools in front of her. “Yeah, sure looks like it. Got a ton of shit here that I never freakin’ expected to see for a good long while, too. Lots of stuff I can use for things…” The tattoo artist trails off at the end of her sentence, picking up a few instruments with a curious expression.
“Such as? I don’t imagine that most of us would be in the mood for a tattoo, after all that’s happened…” Not to mention the fact that Yubi would most likely throw a fit if she heard about the idea.
“Course not, that goes without sayin’. Most of y’all don’t even seem to be the type that’d want one anyways. Jack’ll probably scream his damn head off and pass out if I even pick up a needle with him around.” Sumire replies with a rather unimpressed expression on her face. “...Nah, I got other ideas for my time here. Besides lockin’ up all the dangerous sharp items here, anyways.”
Masakazu couldn’t help but let out a sigh upon realizing it himself. Having all these new rooms was refreshing to say the least, especially to those whose talents prospered with them, but they also contained their own dangers. Jirou had time to experiment with his ‘locking doors’ theory thanks to the existence of his and Risa’s Ultimate Labs, of course, and he even managed to kill Ryoma in his own. The chess player would have to thoroughly investigate the other newly opened labs in order to prevent another tragedy like that from occuring again.
“Right. Well then, I’ll leave that task to you for now. Let me know if you ever need anything, alright?” The tattoo artist merely waved goodbye in response as she continued her inspection, and Masakazu quickly left her Ultimate Lab and the second floor behind him as he climbed to the third.
Using the map on his Electro-ID for guidance, he easily traversed the third floor and managed to locate the second of the three newly opened Ultimate Labs. Upon the door in front of him was a picture of a camera. Curiosity taking hold of him, he slowly opened the door and stepped inside.
This room, unlike the other Ultimate Labs discovered thus far, was far more cluttered and hectic. The floor was littered with innumerable sheets of paper, all carrying various headlines and titles that made less sense than the last. Three whiteboards surrounded a desk and filing cabinets at the back end of the room, depicting little doodles of Masakazu and the others as well as other noticeable events that the chess player recognized, such as their party the other day and a bomb that no doubt symbolized Jirou’s execution.
Masakazu slowly stepped into the room, trying his best not to tread on any of the miscellaneous sheets of paper underfoot as he did so. When he approached the desk, he could hear several sounds coming from under it. Just before he got too close however, the source of all the commotion made herself known as Kimiko quickly popped up from the floor, dumping all sorts of machinery onto the desk afterwards. “Oh, Masa! Great timing. Do you think you could do me a favor real quick? It’ll be worth it, I promise!” The reporter’s excitement was as contagious as always, and Masakazu couldn’t help but smile in response.
“Well in that case, who am I to say no? What is it you need, exactly?” He glanced over to try and figure out what the reporter was doing, but the only thing he managed to recognize in her pile of equipment were a pair of monitors and some strange black boxes.
Kimiko continued going about her business as she replied, not once turning towards the chess player’s direction. “Konomi’s lab place opened up recently too, right? Could you go and pay her a visit, see if she could lend me an extension cord or two? Tell her to come here if she really needs some persuading, I’ll be sure to change her mind!”
Somewhat confused by her demeanor and bizarre request, Masakazu couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow in response. “Alright then…? Would you mind telling me why you want an extension cord so badly? Is it for…whatever it is you’re doing over there?”
“Exactly! I found all this stuff in a box in the corner over there, and it was mostly filled with useless junk…but there were a few interesting pieces of equipment here as well. I just need something I can use to help plug all this stuff in. Who knows, maybe I could even connect to the internet and get a message out!” Kimiko rubbed her hands together eagerly before she continued plugging in the various pieces of machinery into each other.
Masakazu heavily doubted that Monokuma would practically hand any of them an easy way to access the outside world, but who was he to dash any hopes the reporter had otherwise? He was better off just doing what he was asked instead. “Right then, I’ll head there straight away. Need anything else, or…?”
Still refusing to look away from her work, the reporter simply waved a hand dismissively before returning to what she was doing without another word. Taking this as his cue to leave, Masakazu exited the Ultimate Lab and began searching for Konomi’s.
Surprisingly, he didn’t have to look for long. Before Masakazu could even take his Electro-ID out of his pocket, he stumbled upon a door around the corner that had an icon of headphones on it. Considering all of his classmates and their various talents, this could only be Konomi’s lab. He slowly turned the knob and poked his head inside. “Excuse me…”
“Hm? …Oh, it’s just you.”
“Hey hey, Masa! Checking out all the new sights, huh?”
Tetsuya and Konomi, who seemed to be investigating a bit themselves, both stopped whatever they were doing and turned to greet the newcomer. Masakazu quickly stepped inside and shut the door behind him, a bit embarrassed after interrupting them. “Ah…yes, something along those lines, I suppose. Sorry to intrude.”
Tetsuya merely shook his head while Konomi giggled to herself. “You’re doing no such thing. If you’re here to look around, then do so. No skin off my nose.”
“Erm…right. Actually, I’m also here for a favor as well.” The chess player turns his attention towards Konomi before continuing. “Kimiko asked me if it would be possible to borrow an extension cord or two. Apparently she found some monitors and stuff in her lab that she needs to plug in.”
For some reason, Tetsuya momentarily stops examining the space around him and groans upon the mention of the reporter. “Seriously? She was just in here not fifteen minutes ago, and now she needs more shit from here? Why am I not surprised…”
“Oh come on, it’s not the end of the world. Two extension cords is a small price to pay for a bit of happiness, right?” Konomi argues with a playful tone before rummaging through a drawer in front of her. Eventually, she pulled out exactly what she was looking for. “Well, she’ll just have to settle for one instead of two. Hopefully that’ll work out.” The audio technician turned to leave, only to be stopped by Tetsuya.
“Give it here, I’ll deliver it for you. I need to have a chat with little miss journalist anyways, since she ran in and out of here before I could get a word in edgewise.” The waiter said, holding out an empty hand. Konomi, who seemed conflicted at first, eventually relented and handed the cord to him. “Right then. See you two later, I guess.”
Masakazu and Konomi both waved goodbye to the waiter, who left the Ultimate Lab with a somewhat more annoyed expression on his face than usual. The chess player prayed for Kimiko, who was no doubt in for the scolding of a lifetime. Now that his business was over however, he was free to explore and see what this lab had to offer.
The lab itself seemed to be divided into two rooms: one with computers and all manner of audio equipment, and the other with microphones and various musical instruments. A wall separated the two sections of the room, along with a large window and door. Even though he had never seen one himself, Masakazu had seen enough tv shows and movies to be able to recognize this as a typical recording studio for bands and the like.
Once he had taken in the atmosphere and found nothing of note, the chess player turned to leave. Before he could so much as voice his goodbyes however, he felt a small tug on his sleeve. Confused, he turned back around to face Konomi. The audio technician had a smile on her face.
“Actually, do you mind if we talk a bit before you head out, Masa?” And with that, we're back! Again! For real, this time.
First off, I apologize for the lack of a consistent upload schedule. Life does as life wants, unfortunately. From here on out, I'll be working on updates on a looser schedule than before, which beats not having one at all in my opinion. The hope is that I can finish off chapter 2 by the end of May, but don't hold me to that quite yet, haha. As always, thank you for your patience and support.
I don't think I have a question in mind for this update, so just voice your thoughts however you'd like! I'm interested to see what you're all thinking about this story after such a long hiatus.
Well, I guess that's it for now. See you in the next update~

Oh it's so so sooo good to be back!
This update had a fair few characters in it, and mentions of a lot more that didn't appear in person. I think that was a lovely way to get back into the swing of things - I'm already starting to make space in my head for remembering everyone again. I think I missed your style of prose, too. You've very good at nailing Danganronpa's specific cadence of dialogue, while still making sure each character has a unique voice.
Excited for what comes next!
