It’s December, and everyone in Erisville is gearing up for the holiday season. Trees are up, candles are lit, choralers’ voices fill the air. Family members have come from far away reunite with their loved ones. Gifts are exchanged. Peppermint flavored drinks dominate cafés. Even those who don’t celebrate can feel the excitement of those around them, and it’s hard not to smile.
It’s almost enough to cover up the other part of Erisville. The one nobody likes to discuss. The abandoned House up on the Hill, with its sad history and many secrets. The House from which few ever return. The House that has claimed more lives than anybody can remember - let alone prove.
It’s the most magical time of the year.
So why on Earth would you want to spend it here?

INTRODUCTION
Happy December, everybody! I'm CJ, and I'm the sorta person who likes to celebrate the festive season with some good old fashioned ghost stories. If you find that's your kinda vibe too, then come join me for a game of spookyness and backstabbing!
Betrayal at House on the Hill is a roguelike strategy board game, in which six players work together to explore a haunted mansion. Players slowly map out the house together, collecting treasures and uncovering secrets, until something stirs... and one player turns on the others. From that point on, it’s a battle for survival. Will the five innocent explorers be able to co-operate long enough to escape? Or will the traitor kill them all to fulfill their own evil agenda? Only time will tell.
Betrayal is a heavily randomized game, with the map, monsters and items changed up every time you play. Vampires? Aliens? Giant Spiders? Really Nasty Cats? The House has them all, but there’s no telling what you’re up against until it’s right in front of you. Due to the random nature of the game - and the fact that it's designed to be played in person - Betrayal may not always the most well-balanced experience. I’ll do my best to referee the game and steer us away from potentially underwhelming Haunts, but there’s still a very real chance that one team curbstomping the other. Please be patient as we work out all the creases.
This game also has a lot of rules, very few of which are relevant in the first few stages of the game. For the sake of everyone’s sanity, I’ll explain them in small chunks as we go along. But if you would like to ask some questions about the game before you commit to joining, just post below and I’ll get back to you ASAP!
Finally; Betrayal is a rather lengthy game. If you don’t post for a while and I can’t contact you, I may be forced to either skip your turn or boot you from the game. It’s fine if you’re not always available - just let us know what’s going on and we’ll work around you.

HOUSE RULES:
(This guff is really only important for people who are familiar with the game.)
- Dice rolls, stat tracking, and House mapping will be handled by me.
- Base game content only. (Widow's Walk hasn't been ported to my mapping program yet!)
- Players can carry a maximum of five items and omens at a time. (Excludes "The Bite".)
- Weapons cannot be picked up before the Haunt begins. (Pre-found weapons remain usable in Haunt #35.)
- The Mystic Elevator may only be used once per round. It becomes usable again after The Audience moves.
- An NPC may be the Traitor in the event of Haunt #45, or any other Haunt that restricts the Traitor's input to dice alone.
- Secrets of Survival/Traitor's Tome text will be communicated via PMs.
GETTING STARTED:
To join, post below which colour token you would like to be. There can be no double-ups with colour.
If you would like to design your character for the session, fill out this form and send it to me via a private message. If you don’t really care for that sort of thing and would prefer to just play, let me know and I will assign you one of the defaults.
We’ll need five players to start. Given the weird nature of the rules, I'd advise that your characters have an even spread of age and gender… but don't stress if it doesn't work out.

PLAYER LIST:
- RED: Redmond Crowley-Montcroix (LiquidChicagoTed)
A rich, strong, and knowledgeable 39-year old man, with nice hat and a taste for camping and fine wines. He's done his research on the house, it seems. - YELLOW: Bee Zheng (Audience)
A stubborn and unremarkable 8-year old girl, with an old yearbook and a passion for dolls and old movies. It appears she's looking for someone. - GREEN: Morris Harris (GMS Freeman)
A retired, strong and knowledgeable 41-year old man, armed with an unloaded shotgun. He has a fascination with singing and shiny objects, and is a little strapped for cash right now. - BLUE: Finch Meggins (ChaosJester) (character supplied by CJ)
A superstitious and remarkably level-headed 53-year old woman. She enjoys reading and fine wines, and is here on some very personal business. - PURPLE: Elijah Kindley (Cassette)
A kindhearted, speedy and steadfast 19-year old boy with a photograph tucked away in his wallet. An astrology student and swim club champ, who's here to prove to his friends that the house isn't really haunted. - WHITE: Satomi Satomi (Madsinzero)
A snippy and remarkably speedy 14-year old girl with an old flip phone. She enjoys shopping and music, and seems to be bored out of her skull tonight.
Late arrivals, spectators, and deceased players can also play along! When it’s the Audience’s turn, anybody can leave a suggestion for Bee Zheng to do. The most popular choice will be carried out. If there’s a tie, I’ll flip a coin. If there are no suggestions - or we're in need of a tutorial - I’ll move her along automatically.
