The Magic of The Dark Eye:
In Aventuria, there is a notable number of supernatural powers able to affect mortals. The most common of these is magic. Once exclusive to gods and demons, the ancient goddess Mada took pity on the mortal races for their weakness and shattered the Citadel of Magic, spreading its energy across the spheres and granting it to the mortal races in the process. All elves, trolls and sapient dragons, as well as some members of every other sapient race are magically talented, albeit this gift is very rare among dwarves and ogres. For her crime, the god Praios chained Mada to the moon, from where she is forced to silently watch the spheres until the end of times.
If you wish to submit a character who is a mage, you will find an overview of the different types of magic and magic users that exist in the world of the Dark Eye. Your character can be any of these, or even a combination (a guild mage who spent time with druids and learned their art would not be unthinkable, for example). If you have further questions after reading this guide, just send me a PM, I am here to help. I know creating a magic user is among the most difficult tasks, but if you want to do it, me and this guide will hopefully be able to explain everything you need to start. For the beginning, I’ll give you an overview of the types of magic, followed by an overview of magic users and academies that exist in Aventuria.
Magic manifests itself in many forms, but mostly needs to be channeled into the form of spells, each having specific effects and requiring specific actions to be successfully casted. Mages who do not need to perform these actions and can instead shape magic as they desire are called Free Mages and they are equal parts rare and extremely powerful. Perhaps one in ten thousand mages even has the potential of being a free mage and it often requires decades of training even from them. The rest can still achieve great power, but they are limited to existing spells. There are hundreds of spells and giving you an overview of each of them would be way too numerous, but in the following part, I would like to give you an overview of the different types of spells. Each magic academy only teaches an assorted few of these types in greater depth, so most mages will never learn spells of more than three types, or will only gain superficial knowledge of the other types. Each spell requires arcane energy, which the mage can draw from, but using too much of it at once without resting exhausts the mage and can, at worst, even lead to their death. Mages also cannot be priests of a god. While many churches accept former mages in their ranks, the ritual that binds them to their god as a chosen priest, while granting them access to karmic energies, also cuts the mages ties to the arcane. As such, a character can be either a mage or a priest of a god. Since the ordination is for life, a mage who chooses to serve a church instead will permanently lose access to his arcane skills. It should also be noted that iron temporarily severs the connection between a mage and his magic. Being in prolonged contact with iron, such as wearing metal armour or being bound in chains can disturb, hinder or outright prevent a mage from casting spells. Special types of ore are particularly potent at that and chains made from these materials are used by mage-hunters to nullify the threat a captured mage poses. This is one of the reasons why mages rarely wear heavy armour, as it effectively hinders them from doing what they are good at.

The Types of Magic:
Anti-Magic:
Anti-magic focusses on countering and nullifying enemy spells, either weakening or completely negating their effects. It is a complicated type of magic, requiring meticulous studies and anti-mages are among the most skilled of them all, due to their anti-magic necessarily needing to be stronger than the hostile spells they are meant to counter. They can also remove curses and other harmful magical effects. It is a type most commonly taught by the white guild, albeit some assorted grey mages have started to teach a less strict version of it in their guilds.
Borbaradian:
A rare and barely explored type of magic, Borbaradian magic has been created by the legendary mage Borbarad, enemy of Rohal the Wise, who believed that magic should not be exclusive to a select few, but instead available to anyone. As the only type of magic, Borbaradian magic can be learned by anyone. However, those who are not mages themselves can only channel the spells with blood, not necessarily their own. Since every Borbaradian spell has been created by Borbarad himself, it follows his ideals of strength and domination. Borbaradian spells are dark magic, capable of causing pain in targets, draining them of their youth and strength, affecting their inner fears or even killing them without a touch. It is solely taught by Borbaradians, those who still preach Borbarad’s ideals of radical freedom and is condemned by all of the three guilds. However, it is rumoured that some of the black academies have started to explore its possibilities.
Clairvoyance:
Clairvoyance is a type of magic aimed at improving the senses of the caster, to the point of giving them senses not usually possessed by their race. Most commonly, this means reading the minds of a target, but other well-known aspects of clairvoyance is the analysis of objects or people, to scan them for magic influence and to correctly deduce the type of magic influencing them. Less concerned with flashy spells, clairvoyance is a dry, but highly practical type of magic and mages of all guilds have experts among their ranks. Clairvoyance spells are also taught by most other practitioners of magic and it can, in fact, be considered the most common and neutral form of magic.
Communication:
Communication is a self-explanatory type of magic, as it aims at long distance communication between the caster and one or several targets. Not limited to verbal communication, it also allows for silent talks between mages in secret, or for the sending and receiving of thoughts, memories, impressions or feelings. It is seen as a benign form of magic, one of the few that can hardly be used for harmful purposes and is, as such, looked favourably upon by the priests of the Cult of the Twelve Gods, who occasionally have access to divine powers that resemble aspects of Communication magic.
Damage:
The most classical and iconic type of magic, damage is the type of magic most known by the general population of Aventuria. It includes all kinds of actively harmful and destructive spells, from fire bolts to lances of ice, shards of stone or rays of water. As such, it is closely connected, but not exclusive to elemental magic, though other types of magic can be modified to have harmful effects as well (such as elemental magic being used against a target, or object magic used to create improvised weaponry). Damage is the most popular type of magic and due to most mages being banned from wielding weapons of war, it is also what they commonly use to defend themselves. Many academies, even those who have no focus on damage do teach a few spells of that type, allowing almost any mage to have the knowledge of a handful of harmful spells. Damage is single-mindedly used to kill, injure or at least intimidate another target. As such, the Church of Praios has heavy restrictions on academies who focus on this type. The white guild has most of the experts, seasoned battlemages who use their skills in combat for the good of the Middenrealm. Some of the lighter of the grey guilds have also managed to gain the approval of the Church of Praios to focus on damage and combat magic.
Demonic:
Demonic magic is the darkest art of magic and is exclusively taught by demons themselves, often in exchange for a pact, or rarely by high-ranking demon cultists. Demonic magic has various effects, depending on which demonic domain the mage intends to focus on. Each of the twelve demonic domains belongs to an Archdemon and leads to different results for the spell. A mage who is drawn to the Archdemon Charyptoroth for example could control corrupted water as it pleases him, whereas a mage close to the Archdemon Amazeroth would likely know of demonic spells to drive his enemies insane.
Domination:
One of the more infamous types of magic, domination deserves its dark reputation. It focuses on the direct and almost exclusively ill-intended manipulation of a targets mind, to the point of taking away their free will. Mages skilled in domination use it to create mindless slaves, or to manipulate their targets into following particular orders. The victims often know they behave in an abnormal way, but are usually powerless to break the spell upon them. More subtle arts of domination are used to charm or intimidate a victim without their knowledge. It can also be used to affect the mind in ways more brutal than the subtle art of influence, by forcibly extracting memories, or creating false ones. As one of the darkest non-demonic types of magic, it is taught by the black guild or a few assorted private teachers from the grey guild. The only exception of this is, ironically a white guild, the strictly regulated elite academy in the city of Elenvina, which solely trains mages in direct service of the imperial government.
Elemental:
The counterpart to demonic magic, the two types are mutually exclusive. Elemental magic focuses on manipulating the surrounding non-corrupted elements of the caster, or even summoning the element out of thin air. An elemental mage can create walls of natural stone, bolts of fire or harsh winds, or can do the opposite, creating openings in mountains, calming a storm or quenching a fire. They can also summon and control loyal elementals if the mage is also skilled in the art of summoning. These elementals take on a shape associated with their assigned element and can perform numerous tasks for the summoner. This aspect of elemental magic is not commonly taught by magic academies outside of the grey guild, but is a key part of the magic belonging to witches, druids and shamans.
Environment:
Closely connected to elemental magic, yet not exclusive to it and able to be taught and learned without any connection to the elements is environmental magic. It focuses on manipulating the surroundings of the caster, not just by reshaping it, but also by affecting the laws of physics in a certain area, or by numbing certain senses in an area. Unlike influence magic, it always targets specific areas instead of people. It is therefore seen as more benevolent and less inherently harmful as influence magic and is not rejected by any guild per se.
Healing:
Healing is quite self-explanatory. Magic healers use their arcane energy to heal wounds, diseases, afflictions or mental illnesses. It is a potent and highly useful type of magic and healers are welcome everywhere. As the only type of magic, it is not viewed with suspicion by the peasants and there is not a single guild of magic that would look down upon healers. A skilled healer is able not just to heal any affliction that ails his target, but they can also improve their condition beyond what is usually possible.
Illusion:
Illusion is a comparably easy and simple type of magic, that focuses on creating and maintaining illusions to trick certain targets. Despite being easy to master, to the point where weaker mages can master it with ease, it is highly versatile and masters of illusion can pass the border where their creations can actually influence their surroundings. Due to their lack of talent in other aspects of magic, charlatans are the most famous illusionists. As one of the most versatile types of magic, illusion can range from harmless entertainment to actually harmful manipulation. Deceitful enough to be viewed with suspicion by the white guild, it is not interesting or dangerous enough to be considered worth any attention by the black guild. As such, the crafty mages of the grey guild are the ones most commonly skilled in the art of illusion.
Influence:
Influence teaches spells that aim at influencing and changing what a person sees or feels. Unlike Illusion, Influence only targets a single target and is also capable of changing emotions, while the target keeps a free will, unlike Domination. In the hands of a skilled mage, Influence can be a powerful tool of manipulation, as it is very hard to prove that a target has been affected by it at all. Because of this, is commonly viewed with suspicion and mages specializing on Influence are mostly found in the darker parts of the grey guild or the black guild. The only white academy who teaches influence magic is the Academy of Rommilys, specializing in training the mages working in the ranks of the Middenrealm intelligence agency.
Limbo:
Limbo magic is a rare type of magic, with no guild actively specializing in it and only a few assorted mages able to master this highly difficult and dangerous art. The limbo is the place between spheres and manipulating it can be devastating to a caster who is not careful enough. If used properly, it can be used for teleportation, but also to outright remove targets from this plane of existence. Limbo magic is a niche type, extremely rare and requiring many years of physical and mental training to master. However, the masters of limbo magic are highly sought after by academies of all three guilds and can usually freely choose whom to offer their services to.
Object:
Object magic is connected to shape magic and the two are often taught at the same academies. Unlike shape, however, object focuses on non-living material, on the eponymous objects. If something is not an object, but a living being of any kind, its spells will not work. However, object can be very powerful, capable of reshaping the surroundings of a caster. Common use for it is manipulating certain objects, destroying or mending them, turning whole walls to dust or melting weapons. Experts for object magic can be found in all three guilds, but the black guild has some of the most foremost object manipulators among their ranks. A sub-type of object magic is artifact magic, the creation and use of powerful magical artifacts. This type of magic can similarly be found among all three guilds, but the grey guild has some of the most famous artifact mages in their ranks.
Shape:
Shape is the art of influencing and changing the bodies of living beings. This is not necessarily harmful and rarely permanent, but can be used with malevolent intent. In most cases, shape spells often work for the caster themselves, allowing them to take on the shape of animals, to turn their skin into stone or to turn themselves invisible. Some darker types of shape magic are harmful effects towards others, up to the point where the most skilled shape animals can turn their enemies into animals.
Spirit:
Spirit magic is a rare type of magic that revolves around spiritual beings, the souls of deceased. It is rarely taught by guild mages, but druids and shamans claim to be quite skilled in it. Spirit magic can summon the souls of the dead, which makes it desirable to some necromancers, but it can also be used to contact the dead, or to banish them from the sphere, effectively helping them with moving on. This last part of spirit magic is viewed as highly favourable by white mages, in stark contrast to their negative opinion on the other aspects, and it is commonly taught to anti-mages. The church of Boron outright bans the summoning of spirits though, which makes this art forbidden in most societies. However, the shamans of various wild tribes are skilled in it and openly practice it.
Summoning:
Summoners are mages who focus on summoning and controlling an entity not from the sphere of Aventuria. Such an entity is most commonly a demon and forcing them under the will of the summoner requires either great skill, or a pact with the Archdemonic master of the summoned demon. The art of demon summoning is exclusively taught by the black guild and summoning in general is disregarded as vile by white mages. However, the grey guild offers their own type of summoning, focussing on the summoning of spirits or elementals, who are not necessarily easier to control or more benevolent than summoned demons. One aspect of summoning that is seen as acceptable by white mages is the banishing, which allows a skilled anti-mage to banish a summoned demon, spirit or elemental.
Telekinesis:
Telekinesis is a single-mindedly and not particularly versatile type of magic, that is nonetheless quite practical. It allows the caster to manipulate the movement of themselves or targets, both living and non-living. While having just one particular effect, telekinetic spells can be used to varying purposes, such as using the weapons of an enemy against themselves, lifting heavy objects, magically opening doors, or even allowing the caster to fly. It is seen as a neutral type of magic and taught by all three guilds.
Temporal:
Another rare type of magic, temporal magic is associated with the divine being Satinav, who is not worshipped as a god, but nonetheless said to closely watch temporal magic, to prevent its abuse. There is no academy that teaches temporal magic in particular, despite its undeniable power. Time mages can affect the flow of time, though their art can be easily abused. Perhaps the only reason why it isn’t is because of Satinav’s careful watch, as the Guardian of Time and his servants are known to ruthlessly punish the abuse of such magic. It allows the caster to travel through time, to summon beings or objects from the past, to look into the past, but also to age or rejuvenate certain objects or beings. Some aspects of temporal magic are relatively harmless, while others are outright forbidden. Perhaps the only magicians who know more than just some rudimentary snippets of temporal magic are druids, who are often responsible enough not to meddle with it.

The Mages of Aventuria:
It is estimated that about three percent of Aventuria’s population is capable of magical feats and most of these can be found in one of the three official guilds of magic. Due to its power, giving ordinary mortals near superhuman might, magic is viewed with suspicion by the Church of Praios. In the past, mages have even been hunted down in the Middenrealm, until the rule of Rohal the Wise, legendary emperor of the Middenrealm and himself a mage of incredible power, who created a truce with the church by founding the first guild of magic, convincing the existing academies of magic to unite under his leadership, with clearly defined rules that were written down by himself together with assorted priests of Praios and important mages. These rules are known as the Codex Albyricus. While all guilds nominally swear upon the codex, there are some academies where its rules are seen more loosely, or even openly ignored. Some important aspects negotiated in the Codex Albyricus are rights, but also duties of guild mages. Among their rights is freedom of movement and the exclusive right to offer magic services, while their duties include having their clothes clearly show their status as a mage, a ban on wielding armour or weapons of war and a ban on blood magic. Mages who do not follow the Codex Albyricus can be subjected to punishment from authorities without any legal document to defend them. However, there are mages who operate outside the guilds willingly, either to preserve their freedom, or because they practice a type of magic not covered or approved by the guilds.
Later on, after Rohal’s death, his singular guild separated into three guilds roughly divided between three philosophies. Each guild has a varying number of academies under their command, where new mages are trained and experienced mages teach or research. Once someone trained at a certain academy, they often have a duty to it. The head of an academy is known as a spectability. The spectabilities of each academy of a guild meet once a year to hold council. There, they also elect a leader for their entire guild out of their ranks, who has a limited degree of control over the other spectabilities and represents their guild to the rest of the world. These guild leaders are known as the Convocatus Primus. Every seven years, the mages of Aventuria, of all guilds and even guildless mages and scientists of note meet in a previously elected academy for the All-Aventurian Council of Magic, discussing new and important developments in the world of magic. Every guildmage has a staff as a sign of his position, which can also be used to quickly cast previously prepared spells. They are also required to tattoo the symbol of their academy on a permanently visible part of their body. Most mages choose the palm of their right hand for this, though the black guild prefers the left instead.
In the following part, I will give you an overview of the three guilds, followed by other practitioners of magic who are not part of the guilds.
The Three Guilds of Magic:
The Alliance of the White Pentagram:
More commonly known and referred to as the white guild, they are the guild working most closely with authorities, especially the church of Praios, which looks upon the white mages more favourably. Being a white mage means absolute dedication to authority and rules. It is an elite order with high demands and joining it means joining for life. It comes with strict duties, but a white mage is usually the most socially accepted, even eligible of getting official positions as court mage in one of the northern courts. In general, the white guild is the strongest in the northern half of Aventuria, in the Middenrealm and the Bornland. During times of war, white mages can be found in official units, deployed by one of the two nations. They are loyal to the guild, to the authorities of the nation their academy is located in and to the church of Praios. Many white mages are battlemages, skilled at destructive magic, yet a small number of white academies is more inclined towards healing, such as the academy in Thunderbrook. Convocatus Primus of the white guild is Saldor Foslarin, one of the few magically talented dwarves and an infamous hothead. He leads the academy in Beilunk, the only academy whose members are legally allowed to carry and train with a longsword. Other important white mages are Foslarin’s second-in-command in the guild, the strict and humourless Racalla of Ravenmouth, as well as Virilys Eibon, First Court Mage of the imperial court at Gareth, a charming half-elf who is more a politician than a guildmage. Rohal the Wise, founder of the guilds of magic is usually seen as a white mage, especially as far as the opinion of the white guild is concerned, even if his ideals were more closely aligned with those of the moderate grey mages.
The Great Grey Guild of the Mind:
Also known as the grey guild, they are by far the largest and most wide-spread of the three guilds, being twice as large as the white and black guilds combined. Most guildmages in Aventuria are grey mages. However, this comes at the cost of the grey guild not being a singularly effective organization such as the white guild, or a close-knit group of like-minded such as the black guild. Instead, the grey guild gives a home to all those who are not as authoritarian as the white guild or as ruthless as the black guild. The result is a huge amount of mages of all shapes and colours, from technically white mages, who are loyal to a nation by their own accord without wanting to commit to the white guild, all the way to dark grey mages just one step away from the black guild. Despite their size, they are notoriously quarreling amongst each other and it is hard to unite the grey mages behind one common purpose. Constant disputes about the direction of the guild leave many of the less ambitious grey mages disillusioned with guild politics and there are many who never even deal with the inner workings of their guild. There are also many grey mages who are just in the guild for the wealth it offers, as the grey guild is specialized in quick and quiet magic service, especially in the creation of powerful artifacts. The Convocata Prima of the grey guild is Prishya of Garlishgreet, spectability of the highly respected Hall of Higher Magic at Punin. Other important grey mages are the artifact mage Khadil Okharim, the mercantile and cunning spectability of the Dragon’s Egg Academy at Khunchom, as well as the famous and highly skilled archmage Rakorium Muntagonus.
The Brotherhood of the Knowing:
Finally, the black guild. The smallest, yet most infamous of the three guilds, the black guild can mostly be found in southern Aventuria, with only a handful academies under its banner. Black guilds can be found in the city states of Al’Anfa, Mirham and Brabak in the southern jungles, the desert city of Fasar and, oddly, in the northern Valley of Svelt near the Orklands, in the free city of Lowangen. Uniquely among the guilds of magic, it also includes the alchemists guild of Mengbilla to its members, despite most alchemists not being magically talented in the traditional definition. The Brotherhood of the Knowing is first and foremost dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. With this in mind, they allow research in topics the white guild would never allow and even the grey guild would officially shy away from. Scientific breakthroughs are sometimes the result, but can also lead to atrocities in the name of science. Most of the time, they are not the evil mages they are commonly painted as by the white guild and the Church of Praios, but merely scientists who value their privacy and freedom over anything else. The black guild has no problems with allowing darker and controversial types of magic, as well as studying and teaching it. As such, they are experts in domination magic, as well as practices that are outright forbidden in the Middenrealm, such as the summoning of demons, necromancy and the creation of chimeras, even if the black mages officially look down upon those who have crossed the line to make pacts with demons. They nominally swear upon the Codex Albyricus, even if their members regularly break the rules, though they draw the line at conspiring with demons or serving the Nameless One. Nonetheless, during their pursuit of knowledge, there are notable black mages who have crossed that line, becoming outlawed even by their own guild. Convocatus Primus of the black guild is Salpikon Savertine, an enigmatic man of potentially non-Aventurian origin. He leads the School of Varying Shapes at Mirham in the southern jungles of Aventuria. Important members of his guild, as well as constant rivals for his position are the charismatic schemer Thomeg Atherion, spectability of the Academy of Mental Domination at Fasar, as well as Menchal ak’Taran, the shady head of the Mengbillan Alchemist’s Guild.
Guildless mages:
Guildless mages exist and they aren’t even particularly rare. In the heart of Aventuria’s civilization, they might be looked down upon and wherever the Church of Praios is strong, membership in the white or grey guild is highly recommended. However, some mages are either exiled from their guild for going against its core principles, or choose not to join a guild after their studies are complete. Some of these are outlaws, especially if they commit crimes. In general criminal mages who escape punishment are exiled from their guild. These are almost exclusively former students of black or grey academies. Private academies might teach a handful of talented mages their art each year without offering membership to a particular guild as well.
Druids:
The druids of northern Aventuria are among the most notable and numerous of guildless magic users. Keepers of Balance and Guardians of the Elements, they live solitary, or in small circles of a handful of druids, but almost always away from civilization and with very limited contact to non-druids. Living in harmony with nature, it is their duty to protect the elements of Aventuria from being corrupted, as well as to protect sacred places of arcane power from being destroyed or misused. Enigmatic and rarely with any concern for the commoners of Aventuria, they are seen with suspicion and indeed, they can have bad intentions for other humans, if their goals clash with those of others. Druids are masters of elemental magic, but also use darker aspects of influence and domination to achieve their goals. Most druids can be found in the northern parts of Aventuria, in the wilder Middenrealm provinces of Meadows and Tobria, as well as the Bornland. They have a strong tradition in Tobria, where they often form larger druid circles. Here, they also interact stronger with ordinary humans, guiding and sometimes ruling over villages in all but name. It is said that their leader must approve the Duke of Tobria before he is given any actual authority over the province. Dwarven mages often choose to live as druids. They are known as Geodes and are solitary hermits and advisors to the dwarven kings.
Shamans:
The term shaman describes one of several types of mages, who belong to the various wild cultures of Aventuria. Living at the borders of civilization, the term can mean one of several people. The human tribes of the Moha in the southern jungle follow the call of shamans, who are in touch with their mysterious jaguar god, Kamaluq. In the north, the Nivesians have shamans who interpret the will of the divine sky wolves for them. The rulers of goblin clans are shamans and every orkish warchief has one or several shamans who guide, advice and sometimes manipulate him. In short, a shaman is a mage who has religious authority. Their magic often manipulates the elements, but they are also masters in communing with spirits, in speaking or breaking curses and in healing. Some shamans practice and teach blood magic. Their magic is as versatile as the shamans themselves are, but they are usually seen as less powerful than trained guild mages.
Witches:
Witches are roughly comparable to druids in the fact they are guardians of the elements and often choose to live away from civilized societies. This is a result of general prejudice against their kind, as witches are seen as evil by the general population of Aventuria. Having to battle many prejudices against them, some witches choose to guide the people in her surroundings, providing healing and other benevolent magic to prove that they are not as bad as they seem to be. Others remain solitary, only interacting with other witches, who sometimes organize in covens, groups of witches who live and work together. Others are dark witches, who give in to the prejudice they face (and in fact are the ones who keep reminding the commoners of Aventuria what a witch is capable of). They often enter a pact with one of the Archdemons to gain further power. Witches have access to subtle magic, often influencing or quite literally bewitching their victims. They are masters of magically charming a target, or to curse them. However, they are also skilled alchemists and healers. A witch is always accompanied by a companion, a (usually) smaller animal that they are magically bonded with. This animal is half-magic in nature and able to communicate with and serve the witch. Some witches, especially in the city states of southern Aventuria, walk more or less open among humans. The most infamous of these are the scheming spider witches, who are active in the politics of the larger city states and rarely have good intentions.
Charlatans:
Charlatans are technically guild mages. However, they are the type of mage who are simply not talented enough for the higher arts of magic. No charlatan will ever travel through the limbo by his own power, manipulate the elements or dominate a mind. Instead, the magic of the charlatans focuses on illusions. In these areas, they can easily be considered masters though. A charlatan is often a failed guildmage, who had to drop out of the academy of their choice due to simple failure to perform higher spells. However, in the art of illusion there are few more skilled than them. As such, many charlatans earn a living performing with wandering artists. They excel in trades where they have to trick others, either benevolently or with the shameless intent to get rich.
Rascals:
Rascals are a strange and rare type of magic user. They are children who were abducted by fairy creatures and grew up in their realm, learning their ways of magic, before having to leave their foster homes after growing up. They are good-natured tricksters, who are virtually unable to even understand the basics of civilized societies. Outside of the fairy realms they grew up in, they have trouble fitting in and are wanderers, who rarely find homes for themselves. Their magic is never used to harm others, instead they love playing practical jokes on targets they see as deserving of such a punishment. A rascal never means bad though and can be reasoned with, as all they want is to spread joy. There are rare instances of a rascal who found himself unable to deal with the often cruel realities of the world they live in. Without the protection of the fairy realm, they might experience pain or they suffer the loss of a loved one, things they are sometimes not able to overcome. Such a rascal can fall to darker temptations, becoming a dark rascal in the process. Dark rascals retain their previous fondness for practical jokes, but often twisting them to extreme and psychopathic degrees, sometimes openly and willingly harm or even kill others. They have an extremely twisted sense of humour and are, quite literally, clinically insane. Dark rascals are thankfully very rare, even rarer than rascals already are.
Crystal Scryers:
Exclusive to the lizardfolk, crystal scryers have access to a strange magic that is hard to learn for non-Achaz. They draw strength from arcane crystals, using it to save spells, only to cast them immediately later on, often destroying the crystal in the process. Their art is especially known for its proficiency in the magical types of summoning and clairvoyance, but skilled scryers can also open portals to other parts of Aventuria and beyond or dominate the minds of their enemies with their crystals. The way it works is alien to a guild mage and few even bother with learning more of this ancient and half-forgotten art. In return, the Achaz do not reveal their secrets to the other races, which means that the few non-Achaz crystal scryers are often nothing more than amateurs, who have access to other types of magic and pursue this art merely out of curiosity.
Elves:
The elves of Aventuria deserve special mention, as every single one of them is a naturally talented mage, without suffering from the drawbacks of mortal mages. Their magic is intuitive to them and the art of casting spells feels odd to elves who grew up among the elvish kinships. Instead, their magic just happens as an extension of their physical capabilities. An elf might instinctively use a spell to sharpen his already superhuman senses while he is aiming an arrow at his target, or use a spell to help him climb when faced with an obstacle. Mortal can learn the basics of the elvish magic, but it is notably harder for them. Elvish incantations are often kept as songs and most of their magic is naturally inclined towards peace, working best when the elf is in peaceful surroundings or in a calm state of mind.
Demon Cultists:
While I give an overview of their demonic masters in the Gods and Demons of Aventuria thread, the demon cultists deserve special mention here. Unlike the priests of the Twelve Gods, demon cultists can be mages and a pact with a demon does not diminish and sometimes even enhances a mages natural arcane energy. Entering into a pact with an archdemon is the only reliable way to learn demonic magic. As such, many, though by no means all demon cultists are mages, often starting their careers among one of the other types of mages mentioned above. Since anyone call fall to the demonic temptation, demon cultists can be found anywhere and from any possible background. Their demonic spells and skills are numerous and often depend on the cultists personality and the demon they choose a pact with. For example, a vengeful witch might enter a pact with Belshirash, the Archdemon of winter and merciless hunt, to gain access to magical arrows who always hit their mark in order to take her revenge, while a crippled guildmage might enter a pact with Asfaloth to heal his body and gain the ability to shape flesh as he sees fit. In general, the deeper the cultist is in their demonic pact, the greater their powers. There are seven stages to any pact. By the seventh, the soul of the cultist fully belongs to the Archdemon and they are often more demon than mortal already, completely at the mercy of their masters. Their powers grow with each of the circles, but it similarly becomes harder to break off the pact or to resist its negative consequences. Each pact also brings a demonic mark with it that reveals the cultists demonic taint, sometimes for anyone to see, sometimes merely notable for priests of the Twelve Gods, the natural enemies of the Archdemons. The nature of this mark often reflects the demon they have sworn themselves to and it grows worse the deeper the cultist falls in his pact. In exchange, they gain incredible powers the deeper they are willing to fall.

The Academies of Magic:
There are several dozen academies all over Aventuria for mages to study in. This following post is meant for those of you who wish to submit mages, to give you an overview of where your mage could have gained which skill. It should be noted, there is no complete list of druid circles, witch covens or tribes with shamans and there are likely countless of them, so if you wish to submit one of these characters, you can just come up with a circle, coven or tribe of your own or leave it to me.
The Academies of the White Guild:
Academy of Domination at Elenvina:
The only academy in the white guild that is allowed to teach spells of the domination and influence type, it has, in fact specialized on them. It is an elite academy, accepting only those with utmost loyalty to the Middenrealm. Often, those who study here are already meant to work for the Middenrealm intelligence agency one day, or for one of the higher nobles of the empire, as a court mage. The spectability of Elenvina is Jorgen Vittelbeck, a pious man, who is eager to please his superiors in an attempt to make his academy more accepted among the white guild despite the magic it specializes in.
Academy of the Arcane Armour at Gareth:
Located in Gareth, the capital of the Middenrealm, this academy is one of the most important in the white guild. Specialized on protective spells, it has a particular focus on antimagic, but also teaches defensive spells of the types object and shape. Spectability of Gareth is Racalla of Ravenmouth, member of the powerful House Ravenmouth of Darpatia and second-in-command of the white guild, a strict and serious woman, who is rumoured to have aspirations to succeed Saldor Foslarin in leadership of the white guild.
Academy of Arcane Knowledge at Methumis:
A horasian academy, specializing exclusively in the art of clairvoyance. Its members are particularly devoted to the goddess Hesinde. It therefore has very close relations to the church of Hesinde and the highest members of the church are known to regularly teach in Methumis, or to visit its extensive library, which they have made quite a number of contributions for. Spectability of Methumis is Hesindiane Gilindor, a quiet and solitary woman, who is in deep conflict with the leadership of the white guild.
Academy of Sword and Staff at Beilunk:
The only academy in Aventuria that allows its students to wield a longsword, even training them in the process. Sword and Staff students are battlemages and the academy specializes exclusively in damage. They are among the most famous battlemages in all Aventuria, equal parts skilled in close combat and destructive magic, and have served in every war the Middenrealm has ever fought. Their current head is Saldor Foslarin, one of the few magically talented dwarves, who also serves as the current Convocatus Primus of the white guild. Foslarin’s temper is infamous and he is seen as a narrow-minded hothead, yet also a highly capable battlemage and one of the key players in the good relations between the Middenrealm and the dwarven kingdoms.
Academy of Light and Darkness at Nostria:
The only magical academy in the kingdom of Nostria, located in the capital of the same name, the Academy of Light and Darkness is known as a simple and down-to-earth academy. The students not only learn how to wield arcane power, but they are also taught a variety of crafts. Students are expected to live ascetic and humble. The academy is particularly specialized in object and environment magic. Spectability of Nostria is Tobin Grybeck, a modest man who has little contact to the other spectabilities, who often look down upon him for his deliberate lack of worldly riches.
Anatomic Institute at Vinsalt:
The Anatomic Institute at Vinsalt is the foremost academy of healing magic in all Aventuria. Located in the rich city of Vinsalt, it is the pride of the Horasian academies and the institute receives generous donations from the nobility of the empire. More open-minded than most white guilds, it allows for experiments on dead bodies, which has previously resulted in some radical breakthroughs on the field of anatomy. Spectability of Vinsalt is Bascanai of Adima, an older and forgetful woman, but nonetheless one of Aventuria’s most skilled surgeons.
Hall of Metamorphosis at Kuslik:
One of the oldest academies in Aventuria, the Hall of Metamorphosis is nowadays often overshadowed by the nearby academies in Vinsalt and Grangor. As a result, there is a constant lack of funding and students, despite having a number of famous mages as members of the faculty. It is specialized in shape and object magic. Spectability of Kuslik is Carolan Snakestaff, wielder of the famous Snake Staff, a holy symbol of the church of Hesinde.
Hall of Life at Norcastle:
Aside from the Anatomic Institute, the Hall of Life is the most important academy specialized in healing magic in Aventuria. It is more traditional and does not allow experiments on the human body. However, it is one of the few places in northern Aventuria that teaches the art of alchemy and it has close contact to the bornlandish witches and elves. Spectability of Norcastle is Masha Patroff, a stout woman, distantly related to the local witches.
Information Institute at Rommilys:
The Information Institute at Rommilys is only partially a member of the white guild. First and foremost, it is an actual Middenrealm agency, working hand in hand with the Middenrealm intelligence. The students are almost exclusively spies who undergo magic training to become experts in clairvoyance and anti-magic for their line of work. As such, the academy is highly lawful, yet utterly ruthless and deeply feared by others. Spectability of Rommilys is Praiodana Warkrock, a retired spy who is entirely dedicated to keeping the Middenrealm safe from dangers. For this, she is famously willing to work even with questionable allies.
School of Exorcism at Perricum:
Located on a lonely hill above the city of Perricum, the School of Exorcism has a dark reputation, but a noble goal. It specializes in spirit and anti-magic, more precisely in the exorcism of those unfortunate people who are possessed by spirits or demons. They also care for the clinically insane, who are kept within a special faculty in the academy, where they are either contained, or outright healed from their insanities. Nonetheless, being so close to the clinically insane has driven more than just one member of the faculty into the same depths. Their spectability is the mild-mannered Olorand of Rothrock, who is known as a skilled swordsman on top of his magical abilities.
Academy of Anti-Magic at Ysilia:
After the near-complete destruction of Ysilia during the March of the Thousand Ogres, the academy was one of the first buildings to be rebuilt. Though part of the white guild, the Academy of Antimagic has close contacts to the grey guild just as well. Specialized in anti-magic, it is dedicated to the fight against rogue mages who live in the lawless mountain ranges that surround Tobria, as well as to the protection of the city of Ysilia. Their spectability is the Thorwalian mage Jalna Ingridsdottir, a former adventurer who has travelled with some of the most famous heroes of Aventuria.
Seminar of Elven Communication at Thunderbrook:
Nominally part of the white guild, the academy at Thunderbrook lies close to the Salamander Stones, where the wood elves life. As such, the primary goal of the academy is the harmonic coexistence of elves and humans and students are equal parts humans and elves. A particular aspect of the academy is healing magic, where it combines traditional guildmagical aspects with the magic of elves. Current spectability is the half-elf Jesko of Korbrook, a man who is old by the definitions of his species, with desires to retire and spend the rest of his life among the elves of the Salamander Stones.
The Guardians of Rohal at Angbar:
The Guardians of Rohal are not an academy in the traditional sense of the word, but they still deserve mention as one of the most important organizations within the white guild. The Guardians of Rohal are fanatical white mages, who follow the teachings of Rohal the Wise to extreme degrees. They are not part of any academy, but still loyal to the white guild, serving as their armed forces and guards. They are led by Nostrianus Ironshed, who, despite not leading an academy, is still referred to as spectability and has all the rights the title includes. Ironshed is known as a deeply devout follower of the teachings of Rohal, bordering on being a fanatic.
The Academies of the Grey Guild:
The Academy of Mental Eloquence at Ilsur:
A very small academy, located in the fortress city of Ilsur, the Academy of Mental Eloquence is equal parts academy of magic and school for linguistics. Only accepting four students each year, it is specialized in communications magic and can count some of Aventurias foremost experts in languages to their ranks. Spectability of Ilsur is Filario Cogitas, a bookish and solitary scholar, who puts high value into impeccable manners.
The Academy of Apparitions at Grangor:
Once mocked as an academy for clowns and entertainers, the Academy of Apparitions in the city of Grangor wss once specialized in the artistic elements of illusions, teaching charlatans and aspiring mages how to entertain nobility at the courts of Horasia with harmless tricks. Recently, they have started to regain some reputation as a serious academy, specializing in illusion, but also the summoning of spirits. Their spectability is the eccentric Jikhbar al-Kurechem, a loud and jolly man, with a talent for jokes.
The Academy of Mental Wayfare at Belhanka:
A rather nonconventional academy and the only one in all Aventuria solely specialized in Telekinesis. Its students are often travellers, who use the academies powerful teleport spell to explore distant corners of Aventuria. This has given it the blessing of the church of Aves, god of adventurers. Beyond that, the academy stays out of guild politics and has a rather good reputation. Spectability is the experienced nivesian traveller Kiamu Vennerim.
The Academy of High Magic at Punin:
Perhaps the most respected academy in all Aventuria, it has the benefit of being located in Punin, in the heart of the continent. The Academy of High Magic nominally specializes in summoning and clairvoyance magic, but over the years, due to its sheer size, it has attracted experts in all sorts of magic, so that nowadays, students can learn about most aspects of magic. It has the largest library in the known world and a common saying is that things that are not mentioned in the library of Punin simply do not exist. Their current spectability is Prishya of Garlishgreet, of the powerful House Garlishgreet of Windhag. She is also the Convocata Prima of the grey guild, leading the deeply divided guild for over a decade now. Known as a prim and somewhat uninspired, yet highly determined and lawful woman, Prishya’s time as the leader of the grey guild has been remarkably calm and without any scandals.
The Academy of Deformation at Lowangen:
One of two academies in the city of Lowangen, the Academy of Deformation is by far the more popular one, given that the other is part of the black guild. Open-minded, they accept druids and witches among their students and have contact to circles and covens throughout northern Aventuria. Many of the mages have become heroes when they defended Lowangen during the Ork Storm. They specialize on object and shape magic. Spectability of Lowangen is Elcarna of Highstone, a kindly old man, who is highly respected for his wisdom.
The Dragon’s Egg Academy at Khunchom:
Without a doubt the richest academy in Aventuria, the Dragon’s Egg Academy lies in Khunchom, the famous port city in the eastern Tulamidya. It has a sole focus on object magic, more precisely in the sub-type of object magic, the artifact magic. With the most skilled artificiers in all Aventuria, the Dragon’s Egg academy has gained a brilliant reputation. However, it freely sells its artifacts, which has led to wanted criminals or black mages buying powerful artifacts in the past. The Dragon’s Egg Academy is ancient and filled with magical artifacts, some of them so dangerous that they must be contained and kept away from the public. Their spectability is Khadil Okharim, a crafty businessman, who worships Phex even above Hesinde as the god of magic, which has given him quite some critics among his guild.
The Hall of Anti-Magic at Kuslik:
Located in Kuslik, in the central Horasian empire, the Hall of Anti-Magic is an elite academy, only accepting the children of rich noblemen, preferably horasians. It has a reputation as a prestigious, yet snobby academy, where someone’s last name is more important than anything else. As the name implies, it specializes in anti-magic. Current spectabiilty is Larissa Uchakbar, sister of a war hero and herself a tulamidyan noblewoman.
The Hall of Quicksilver at Festum:
One of the few academies in Aventuria with three specialized types, the Hall of Quicksilver focusses equal parts on object, elemental and environmental spells. It has made the city of Festum in the southern Bornland to one of the richest cities in Aventuria and also has a strong focus on artifact magic. Furthermore, the academy is known for organizing expeditions to places of arcane power throughout all of Aventuria. Their spectability is Rakorium Muntagonus, undoubtedly one of the most brilliant and powerful mages of his time. Unfortunately, Rakorium has fallen victim to delusions and conspiracy theories and fully believes that the lizardfolk and their agents plan on achieving world domination once more. He nowadays spends a lot of his time researching on how to stop this conspiracy, though he typically fails to deliver proper evidence for his wild theories.
The Hall of Perfected Combat at Belhanka:
Even though the name implies a strong battlemagic tradition, the Hall of Perfected Combat places more value on education and science, rather developing new spells for battlemages to use than to use them themselves, even though damage magic is the most important type of magic taught here. It is a prestigious academy and actually used to be part of the white guild for centuries. However, it recently left the guild, a previously unprecedented move, and joined the grey guild instead. Reason for that was the civil war in the horasian empire, where the spectability found himself unable to support the official stance of the white guild in good faith. This spectability is Landor Gerrano, a surprisingly kind-hearted man for a battlemage, known for his strong moral convictions.
The Combat Seminar at Andergast:
More traditionally an academy for battlemages, the Combat Seminar lies within the city of Andergast and is one of the few academies that places great value on the physical skills of its students. Aspiring mages are trained in matters of the mind and the body, with influence and damage magic being the most important types of magic the academy focuses on. Their spectability is the commoner Aljana Wareffna, a norbardian half-elf and commoner, who leads the seminar with the backing of the grey guild and against the wishes of the Andergastian nobility, who disapproves of her status as a commoner and foreigner.
The Council of Elements at Drakonia:
Perhaps the most unusual academy in all Aventuria, the Council of Elements lies deep within the mountains of the Rashtul Wall, far away from any civilization. The original building is huge, likely build by dragons in the third era and located on a mountain plateau, where the six elements of Aventuria are purer than anywhere else. The academy is solitary and up until recently, few even knew of its existence at all. Focussing on elemental magic and the summoning of elementals, it is known as a place where mages and druids work hand in hand to ensure the harmonic combination of the six elements. There are also six spectabilities, one for each element, but ever since the academy opened itself for the outside world, the spectability of the element fire, Pyriander di Ariarchos, has taken a leadership role for communications with the outside world.
The Pentagram Academy at Rashtul:
An old and respected academy, the Pentagram Academy lies in the city of Rashtul. It follows the traditions of the ancient tulamidyans and preaches very defined opinions about the importance of mages. They are specialized in summoning magic. For centuries, only elementals were allowed to be summoned, but in recent years, under new leadership, the academy has started to allow the summoning of demons. Their new spectability is the young and ambitious Belizeth Djelefsunni, who has taken on the position after defeating and nearly killing the previous spectability, her own father Djelef ibn Jassafar.
The School of Control at Neersand:
The youngest of the magic academies in Aventuria and also known as the smallest, having only a dozen active students at every time. It specializes in influence and domination magic and mostly gains its coin by teaching general education to anyone who pays, regardless of magical talent. Their spectability is Corollku Talasanya, known as one of the few humans who ever spent a prolonged time living among the Rime Elves of the far north.
The School of Clairvoyance at Thorwal:
The only academy in the city of Thorwal, the School of Clairvoyance is notorious for its monetary problems, lacking support by the Thorwalians, who have little use for magic in their city. Nonetheless, it is one of the most famous centres of clairvoyance, but there is also a strong focus on philosophy, up to the point where exiled mages often find a new home in their halls, free to preach about radical philosophies that would be banned everywhere else in Aventuria. As the name implies, the focus of the academy lies on clairvoyance magic. The spectability is Cellyana Assinez, an older woman who is equal part mage and philosopher.
The School of the Direct Way at Gerasim:
Located in the northern wilderness, in the free city of Gerasim, where humans and elves live side by side, the School of the Direct Way has developed into a worldly and open-minded direction, free from any political or religious authorities. They have way less strict policies on their students following the Codex Albyricus and are known for allowing witches and druids as students, or even as part of the faculty. The specialties of the academy lie in telekinesis and communication. Another aspect that separates the academy from others is that there are two spectabilities, one human and one elven. The human spectability is the old and half-senile Anastasius Silverhair, while the elven spectability is Calaya Mistsong, who is comparably young for someone of her race.
The School of the Apparent Being at Zorgan:
Not a magical academy in the traditional sense, the School of the Apparent Being trains not just mages, but mostly charlatans and circus artists. It is the only academy in Aventuria where charlatans are accepted alongside their fully capable magical colleagues. It is specialized in illusion magic and the illusionists trained at Zorgan are the most famed and skilled of their kind in all Aventuria. Current spectability is Lygdoron of Maziroc, who is known as the most skilled illusionist of his time.
The School of the Mutable at Tuzak:
The School of the Mutable is an old and respected institution among Maraskanians, located in Tuzak, the capital of Maraskan. The academy is mostly known for harbouring maraskanian revolutionaries, who fight against the Middenrealm occupation of their island. For this, they are highly divisive among Middenrealm authorities and have faced closure several times in the past, only to reopen after riots broke out in the streets of Tuzak. They are specialized in shape magic and teach even some basics of the magic of druids and elves. Their spectability is Jandon Blugh, one of the most important experts on the elvish way of life, having lived decades among them in the Salamander Stones.
The Stoerrebrandt College at Riva:
The Stoerrebrandt College lies in the far north, in the fortified trading post of Riva. The whole academy is sponsored by the merchants of House Stoerrebrandt, who belong to the most wealthy houses in all Aventuria. As such, mages who train there have to work for the Stoerrebrandt merchants and their expeditions for a certain amount of time after their training. They are trained in clairvoyance and damage magic, the two aspects most important on a Stoerrebrandt expedition. Founder and current spectability is the ageing adventurer Rhenaya Cerrillio.
The School of the Caliphe at Mherwed:
A highly exclusive academy, the School of the Caliphe is loyal to the Novadi Caliphate. They only students allowed to train there are faithful Novadis. It is also the only academy in all Aventuria that, in accordance to the strict Novadi rules of gender separation, only accepts men in their ranks. In general, the 99 commandments of the Novadi faith are followed without exception by all who attend the academy and those who finish their training there exclusively work for the Caliphe and his army. They are specialized in elemental and object magic. Current spectability and founder of the academy is Mherech ben Tuleyman, a devout follower of the 99 commandments, not tolerating any of his students straying from them.
The Order of the Grey Staffs at Perricum:
The Grey Staffs are the armed forces of the grey guild. A splinter group of an organization built up by Rohal the Wise himself, the Grey Staffs have the same origins as the Guardians of Rohal, although they are by no means as radical and usually seen as more laid-back. They are led by the young Tarlisin of Borbra, who only recently assumed the position after their former leader died at a high age. Tarlisin himself is a reformed demon cultist, who is now a devout and peaceful follower of the goddess Tsa.
The Academies of the Black Guild:
School of Varying Shapes at Mirham:
The school of varying shapes is an ancient academy, one of the oldest still active in all Aventuria. It focuses on the old lizardfolk cultures and their ruins in the surrounding jungles of Mirham. In terms of arcane, they have specialized on the types of object and environment, but experts of many kinds of magic can be found among the faculty of Mirham, including, as it is rumoured, former borbaradians. Their leader is Salpikon Savertine, an enigmatic man, who is also the Convocatus Primus of the black guild. His origins and motives are a mystery, yet his arcane skill and leadership abiility is beyond question.
Academy of Mental Domination at Fasar:
One of the most infamous academies in Aventuria, the ancient Al’Achami, as it is called in Tulamidya is located in the heart of the desert city of Fasar. With considerable political influence, it freely teaches the skills of domination and influence. Up until recently, it has been firmly in the grip of the radical cult of the Borbaradians, but spectability Thomeg Atherion recently made waves by exiling all of them from the academy. For this move, he has been named second-in-command of the black guild. Atherion is a ruthless power player and charming master of manipulation, one of the most eccentric figures among the black guild.
Dark Hall of Ghosts at Brabak:
Next to Fasar, the other infamous academy of Aventuria and for many the worst of them all. Located in the far south, in the city state of Brabak, the Dark Hall of Ghosts is the last academy in all Aventuria that openly teaches necromancy and the summoning of demons, focussing on summoning and, as it is rumoured, the training of demonic magic. The Brabaci claim to have no influence on previous students, some of whom went on to become infamous criminals. Their spectability is Demelia Terbysios, a vain and
Hall of Illumination at Al’Anfa:
More than just a simple academy of magic, the Hall of Illumination offers a widespread education to anyone who can pay for it. The nobility of Al’Anfa has studied there and the Hall of Illumination offers the most thorough education in the entire continent. The arcane faculty is merely one of several, but one of the most influential, focussing on clairvoyance and damage magic, with their trained mages often working for the Al’Anfanian navy. They have joined the black guild due to their desire to freely pursue their scientific desires. Their spectability is Dirial Wrathbreak, of the influential House Wrathbreak, one of the highest families of Al’Anfa, a cowardly man who more relies on his wealth and influence than actual skill to resolve conflicts.
Hall of Power at Lowangen:
The northernmost black academy and, in fact, the only one in northern Aventuria at all, the Hall of Power is located in the free and semi-lawless city of Lowangen. Just like its role model, the infamous academy at Fasar, it specializes in domination and influence magic, but never quite reaches the same reputation or power as the more advanced academy at Fasar. Still, it remains a gathering spot for aspiring black mages in northern Aventuria. Its spectability is the half-elf Oswyn Pushinsky, a schemer with a habit of sucking up to those truly in power in the guild.
Alchemist’s Guild at Menbilla:
Only nominally an academy, the alchemists of Mengbilla have joined the black guild and bring considerable prestige and wealth with them. They do not train mages, but teach the art of alchemy better than anyone else in Aventuria. Infamously, they have particularly specialized in poison. Their leader is a man known as Menchal ak’Taran, who has recently gained a lot of importance in the ranks of the guild. However, his open contact with the forbidden cult of the Borbaradians has given him quite a bad reputation among his colleagues.
The Shadow Coven at Mirham:
Not much is known of the Shadow Coven beyond its existence. Previously an ancient tulamidyan order of assassins, Salpikon Savertine has recently restored them, to install them as the armed forces of the black guild, similar to the Guardians of Rohal and the Grey Staffs for the white and grey guild. Led by Savertine himself, they have yet to appear openly, but they are rumoured to be behind number of strategic sabotages and assassinations across all Aventuria, apparently working with the infamous Hand of Boron, the elite assassins of the Al’Anfanian empire.
